Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into theaters with one of the biggest box office debuts in Hollywood history.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo adventure as the Marvel hero earned an estimated $355 million from theaters in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. The movie added approximately $572 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide opening to an extraordinary $927 million.

Those numbers give Brand New Day the second-biggest domestic opening weekend and second-biggest global debut ever recorded. The film trails only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $357.1 million domestically and approximately $1.22 billion worldwide in 2019.

The domestic difference between the two movies is remarkably small. Based on Sunday’s studio estimates, Brand New Day finished only around $2 million behind the seven-year-old record held by Endgame.

Final weekend figures are expected to be released on Monday, meaning the totals could still move slightly in either direction. Regardless of where the final number lands, the latest Spider-Man movie has already secured its place among the largest theatrical events ever.

    Spider-Man Sets A New Opening-Day Record

Although Brand New Day did not quite surpass Endgame for the full weekend, it did defeat the Avengers blockbuster in another major category.

The movie earned an estimated $168 million domestically on Friday, including money collected from Thursday preview screenings. That gives Brand New Day the biggest opening day in domestic box office history.

Endgame previously held the record with approximately $157.4 million on its opening day in April 2019. Spider-Man therefore surpassed that total by more than $10 million.

The record-breaking Friday followed an enormous preview performance. By the time regular Friday screenings began, it was already clear that the movie was attracting an audience closer to an Avengers-level crossover than a conventional solo superhero release.

Sony initially projected a more conservative $325 million domestic weekend. Strong attendance on Saturday and Sunday pushed the estimate approximately $30 million above that forecast.

The result is especially notable because the movie opened in 4,487 domestic theaters and did not have access to every premium screen typically available to a release of this size. Many IMAX locations were still committed to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which opened two weeks earlier.

Brand New Day Easily Passes No Way Home

Before this weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home held the franchise record for the biggest domestic opening.

The 2021 multiverse event debuted with $260.1 million in the United States and Canada. At the time, that was the second-largest domestic opening ever, behind only Endgame.

Brand New Day exceeded its predecessor’s debut by approximately $95 million.

That is a surprising result considering the unusual circumstances surrounding No Way Home. The earlier movie brought Holland together with former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield while also featuring villains from their respective franchises.

The return of those characters turned No Way Home into a multigenerational event. It ultimately earned more than $1.9 billion worldwide despite opening during a period when the theatrical industry was still recovering from pandemic-era closures and restrictions.

Brand New Day does not rely on the same collection of returning Spider-Man stars. Instead, it moves Holland’s Peter Parker into a new stage of his life following Doctor Strange’s memory spell at the end of No Way Home.

The enormous opening indicates that audiences remained invested in Holland’s version of the character even without another reunion involving Maguire and Garfield driving the marketing campaign.

The Film Delivers Sony’s Biggest Opening Ever

The $355 million domestic launch also gives Sony Pictures the largest opening weekend in the studio’s history.

Sony has controlled Spider-Man’s theatrical film rights since before Sam Raimi’s original movie arrived in 2002. The studio later reached an agreement with Marvel Studios that allowed Holland’s version of Peter Parker to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That partnership has produced several major box office successes, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and No Way Home. Holland has also appeared in Marvel Studios releases including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

However, none of those solo Spider-Man movies opened anywhere close to the level reached by Brand New Day.

The previous Sony record belonged to No Way Home. With nearly $100 million separating the two openings, Brand New Day did not simply edge past the studio’s previous benchmark. It established an entirely new one.

    International Audiences Added $572 Million

The movie’s performance was not limited to North America.

Brand New Day earned an estimated $572 million from more than 73,500 international screens. China accounted for approximately $121 million of that total, giving the film one of its most important overseas markets.

Combined with the domestic result, the international launch brought the movie to $927 million worldwide after only one weekend.

That is the second-largest global opening in history. It moved ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, which debuted with approximately $640.5 million worldwide in 2018, as well as the roughly $600.5 million global opening earned by No Way Home.

Only Endgame has opened higher. Its $1.22 billion launch remains in a category of its own, partly because the film opened across nearly every major international market at the same time and represented the conclusion of more than a decade of interconnected Marvel storytelling.

Even without taking the worldwide record, earning more than $900 million in a single weekend gives Brand New Day an enormous head start as it begins its theatrical run.

Tom Holland Continues An Unusual Box Office Run

The success also adds another remarkable accomplishment to Holland’s career.

The actor has now appeared in several of the largest opening weekends ever. His Marvel appearances include Infinity War, Endgame, No Way Home and Brand New Day, placing him at the center of four historic global debuts.

He is also currently appearing in another major theatrical success. Holland has a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which remained in second place domestically during its third weekend.

The Odyssey earned an estimated $51 million domestically over the weekend, bringing its North American total to approximately $395.5 million and its worldwide total to more than $911 million.

That means two films featuring Holland and Zendaya were simultaneously responsible for the overwhelming majority of the weekend’s theatrical business.

While their roles and the movies themselves are very different, the unusual overlap helped produce a major weekend for theaters during the heart of the summer season.

North American Theaters Had Their Biggest Weekend Ever

The arrival of Brand New Day did not only create records for Sony and the Spider-Man franchise.

Combined ticket sales across all films reached an estimated $430 million in the United States and Canada. According to theatrical measurement company Rentrak, that represents the biggest overall weekend in North American box office history.

Brand New Day was responsible for most of that total, but the continued strength of The Odyssey gave audiences two major event films to choose from at the same time.

The rest of the domestic top five consisted of family-oriented holdovers. Toy Story 5 earned approximately $6.3 million, followed by Minions & Monsters with $5.8 million and Moana with $5.3 million.

The weekend is an encouraging sign for an industry that has spent years debating whether moviegoing habits permanently changed after the pandemic. Audiences may be more selective about what they see in theaters, but they continue to turn out in enormous numbers when a release feels like a genuine event.

Spider-Man Remains One Of Marvel’s Most Reliable Heroes

The performance arrives after several years of conversation about superhero fatigue.

Not every comic-book film has connected with audiences at the level studios once expected. A crowded market, inconsistent quality and the growing amount of interconnected streaming content have made viewers more selective.

Spider-Man has largely remained an exception.

The character has maintained popularity across several generations, beginning with Raimi’s trilogy starring Maguire, continuing through Andrew Garfield’s two films and expanding again with Holland’s introduction to the MCU.

Sony’s animated Spider-Verse movies have also introduced Miles Morales to a wider theatrical audience while proving that the franchise can support dramatically different visual and storytelling styles.

Brand New Day appears to have benefited from that long history without depending entirely on nostalgia. Its marketing presented the film as a fresh beginning for Peter after the world forgot his identity, giving audiences a clear reason to see how his life had changed.

A Strong Audience Response Could Give The Film Staying Power

A massive opening does not automatically guarantee that a movie will maintain momentum throughout its theatrical run. The next test will be how well Brand New Day holds during its second and third weekends.

The early signs are encouraging. Audiences awarded the movie an A CinemaScore, suggesting that the majority of opening-night viewers responded positively to what they saw.

Strong word of mouth will be important because the movie opened at such an unusually high level. Even a normal percentage decline could result in a significant drop in its second weekend simply because the starting number is so large.

The film will also continue sharing premium-format screens with The Odyssey and will face additional competition as August releases arrive.

Still, a $927 million global beginning gives the movie considerable breathing room. It will pass $1 billion almost immediately and should quickly become one of the highest-grossing Spider-Man films ever.

Whether it can eventually challenge the $1.9 billion worldwide total earned by No Way Home will depend on repeat viewings, international holds and the strength of the upcoming release calendar.

    Final Numbers Could Still Change

The current $355 million domestic and $927 million worldwide figures are studio estimates issued on Sunday. Final numbers are expected Monday after actual ticket sales from the full weekend have been counted.

That distinction is particularly important because Brand New Day is sitting so close to the domestic opening record.

Endgame opened with approximately $357.1 million, leaving a gap of only around $2 million between the two movies. A stronger-than-expected Sunday could push the final Brand New Day total higher, while adjustments could also bring it down.

For now, Endgame remains the official domestic and worldwide opening-weekend champion.

What is already certain is that Spider-Man: Brand New Day owns the biggest domestic opening day ever, the largest opening in Sony Pictures history and the biggest opening ever for a Spider-Man movie.

After more than two decades of theatrical adventures, Spider-Man is not showing any signs of losing his grip on the box office.
