Video Quality

Spiritwalker comes to Blu-Ray with a stunning AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.41:1. This film has nice pops of color within some of the interiors complementing the icy blue palette that bathes most of the film. Everything appears very natural and vibrant when it comes to certain elements of the clothing and production design. Where the transfer really shines is the impressive level of detail in even the subtlest aspects. Everything from the smallest facial details to the texture of the interior of the apartment is quite impressive. The picture is mostly clear with only brief instances of murkiness during a few darker scenes. Black levels are admirable in their depth. Skin tones are natural throughout with some impeccable details present in certain shots. The film sports some dazzling cinematography, and that is showcased pretty well here. Overall, this is quite a powerful transfer.

Audio Quality

The Blu-Ray disc comes with a lively DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio presentation in the original Korean that handles the action incredibly well. All of the sounds are balanced well during the action sequences from the smashing of furniture to the thud of hand-to-hand combat. The chase scenes and other such kinetic moments provide a fantastic amount of activity in the low end. The track offers expert level immersion into the environment so that even the subtlest elements are represented. Speakers are subjected to a full-on sonic throttling throughout the duration of the presentation while providing a fully realized world to sink into. Directionality of sound is never an issue with this track, and dialogue is reproduced with supreme clarity. The audio presentation is just as impressive as the visual one. Optional English subtitles are provided.

Final Thoughts

Spiritwalker is an inventive and thrilling science-fiction action spectacle that plays with the genre in compelling ways. High concept movies such as this are not exactly a rare breed, but the way in which the premise is used to unravel the mystery and tap into emotional reservoirs works incredibly well. Rumor is that this could receive an American remake in the next few years, but do not wait until then to get a taste of this great bit of fun. Well Go USA has released a Blu-Ray with an excellent A/V presentation and a couple of brief special features. While far from a blanket statement, the care put into crafting a hard-hitting action scene on an international level make domestic efforts look a bit anemic. Don’t miss out. Recommended

Spiritwalker is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital.
