Kirk Fu
For fans like myself of the original Star Trek, Captain James T. Kirk was known as many things. Leader, strategist, ladies man, and fighter were some of the skills Kirk brought to the command table. Now, Star Trek writer Dayton Ward explores those fighting skills in a fun book he entitles – Star Trek Kirk Fu Manual: A Guide to Starfleet’s Most Feared Martial Art.
Fighting the Kirk Way
This tongue in cheek collection studies the various fighting techniques that the legendary James Kirk displayed in many an episode. This was shown in a collection of Illustrations by Christian Cornia arranged like an actual fighting manual. Ward’s explained his idea for the book.
I kind of pitched this idea, I want to say half-jokingly, but it probably wasn’t even that much. It was just like, ‘Hey, I’ve got this idea for a funny gift book if you ever are looking for something like that.’ I pitched it as a hand to hand guide, like a spoof on hand to hand combat manuals. And then as we started talking about it, I realized there’s more humor to be mined here from this. I wrote up a formal pitch and sent it in and they loved it.
Dayton Ward
Ward is a veteran of the Star Trek book universe. He has written over 20 Star Trek novels. This is in addition to the several novellas and short stories he has written. With this work, it is his hope that the book will appeal to those Trek fans who, like him, have always admired the fighting acumen of Kirk. And find the humor in it, just as he has.
