When Genndy Tartakovsky, who created Star Wars: Clone Wars, watched the opening to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he was intrigued. Mainly because he felt like he had seen something similar before…in his own work. He finally expressed his thoughts in an interview with Digital Spy:
The [Force Awakens] opening sequence with all the Star Destroyers crashed on the planet. That was literally, exactly the setting that we did for when we introduced General Grievous. It’s even the same silhouette and everything. I mean, they could have come up with it without seeing ours. But it seems too suspicious, you know? And nobody credited us. A few people caught it, but it certainly, to me, was like, ‘Wow! Hey! Look at that! That’s exactly what we did!’ Well, you know, yeah, I’ll take it.
And while the similarities could have been a coincidence, the fact that his show was seemingly removed from Star Wars canon also gave Tartakovsky pause:
It’s frustrating that they tried to erase it from being canon. At first, it WAS canon. And then once George [Lucas] started doing the CG version, he wanted to clean the slate. And so they de-canonized ours.
While Tartakovsky talked about the subject, he also acknowledged that he has moved on from Star Wars. However he does appreciate the support he and his show has received from fans.
But you know what? The whole Star Wars thing – I’ve moved on…I don’t lose sleep over it [laughs]. It’s fun to have people still love it, and for new people to still discover it.
