‘Stargirl’: Season 2 Blu-Ray Review – Breakout Series Soars To Even Greater Heights In Its Sophomore Outing

DC’s Stargirl follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes to take on the legacy of DC’s very first Super Hero team, the Justice Society of America. In the thrilling second season, Courtney and her friends take on one of the most frightening adversaries in DC’s mythology – the dark entity of corruption known as Eclipso (Nick Tarabay).

Video Quality

Stargirl: The Complete Second Season arrives on Blu-Ray with a gorgeous AVC encoded 1080p transfer in its original broadcast ratio of 2.20:1. This framing along with the impeccable cinematography gives the show a cinematic quality that the older Arrowverse shows cannot hold a candle to. This visual style brings such a richness to the series where other shows seem cheap. The levels of detail this presentation is able to eek out is quite striking, as all of the subtle details in the production design are easily identifiable. Skin tones appear very natural across the entire cast throughout the season. The color palette runs on the cooler side with a focus on blues, but there are numerous magical instances of beautiful colors popping off the screen. Black levels are appropriately deep and give way to an excellent amount of detail in shadows. The special effects employed throughout are first rate and perfectly rendered here. There are no egregious instances of aliasing or compression artifacts detectable in this transfer. The Blu-Ray is quite stunning as it brings a meticulously crafted series to life in a gorgeous manner. This presentation is a visual delight.

Audio Quality

This Blu-Ray comes with an incredibly active DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that creates a fully three-dimensional world. Action sequences and more kinetic moments are given the appropriate power in the mix with a forceful showing in the low end. Dialogue always comes through crisp and clear without being stepped on by the powerful score or any sound effects. Ambient sounds are also precisely placed in the rear channels. The spatial awareness of the track is pretty insane at times, and the panning techniques  are used to great effect. Special consideration should be paid to the soaring series music from Pinar Toprak. Her work perfectly sets the tone for the story, and it creates a nicely enveloping sound that draws you further into the show. The audio presentation here is fantastic on all levels.

Special Features

  • Never Alone – Heroes and Allies: A 21-minute featurette which goes beyond Stargirl to also discuss DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Superman & Lois and more. In this piece there is a larger discussion about the teams or family that work together in service of the common good. It is nice to get a perspective from various different shows.
  • Gag Reel: A three-minute look at some of the flubbed lines, missed cues, ruin takes, laughing fits and more that make for an amusing time.
  • Thank You, Georgia – Stargirl: A five-minute conversation with the creatives behind the show as they discuss some of the incentives that come from filming in Georgia. This is a common type of video across DC properties that highlight the tax incentives of the state.

Final Thoughts

Stargirl continues to be one of the most exciting series in the DCTV stable at the moment. In its second season, the show does not let its change in networks hamper it in any way as the top-notch production value and thoughtful storytelling impress just as much. The sophomore season takes some darker turns that elevate the stakes that much more without abandoning what makes the show such a joy to watch. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released a Blu-Ray featuring a commanding A/V presentation and a few more special features than the debut season. If you have not given this series a shot yet, you are missing out on something special. Highly Recommended
