Steven Ogg Discusses Filming That Infamous Negan Scene in ‘The Walking Dead’

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2774″ img_size=”1137×760″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, Negan’s introduction to the series is probably engrained in your mind as one of the most, if not the most; brutal scenes in the entire show. Negan viciously beating both Abraham and Glenn to death was not a short moment. We were subjected to an entire episode holding our breath, just watching Negan toy with Rick and the survivors. One by one, he made it clear that he was in charge and that anyone who messed with him would meet the barb wired end of his bat Lucille. It was an episode that set the tone of the seventh season and also upset many folks, as who wanted to see fan favorite Glenn get his eyeball popped out in front of his wife Maggie, who had lost every loved one in her life.

When we first meet Steven Ogg’s character Simon in this episode, Negan introduces him as his right hand man. His most trusted person, then taunting Rick “did I just kill yours?” We of course know that eventually, the bromance between Simon and Negan would come to an end in a grisly fight that ends with Negan killing Simon and sticking him on the fence outside the factory as a walker. It disappointed me a little, as it would have been interesting to see Simon leave Negan’s side and make a group of his own with hopes to usurp the baseball wielding leader.

At Walker Stalker Con in Orlando, Ogg addressed how it was filming that scene. He explained that even though Negan ultimately killed Abraham and Glenn that there were multiple casualties filmed, so to not reveal who actually was beaten to death. Of course, Ogg states that it was obvious once they went back to work and some actors weren’t there anymore. He also talked about how cold the weather was, creating a perfect atmosphere to film something as daunting and gruesome as season seven’s first episode.

“What was crazy, because you know in that you can see our breath,” Ogg said. “And that night, we were shooting all night, overnight, till the sun came up. And it was cold. And then when we went to shoot part notes in April, when we arrived, it was fucking hot. We’re thinking, ‘How are you going to match the freezing cold November with our breath? That’s going to cost a lot of money, to have our breath!’ But the Walking Dead Gods, that night … the temperature dropped, just that one night we were shooting, and finally we could see our breath. It was quite like, ‘Wow, the Gods like The Walking Dead.’ I got a lot of stories like that.”
