Steven Spielberg Opens Up About Why ‘The Goonies’ Sequel Has Not Happened Yet

It has been a common occurrence ever since The Goonies was released back in 1985, that fans have clamored  for a sequel. Needless to say it hasn’t happened. But it’s not for the lack of trying by stars Sean Astin and Corey Feldman. They have come up with ideas for a potential follow up in the past. But nothing they could push through.

Recently, Josh Gad-hosted Reunited Apart, a virtual reunion benefiting COVID-19 relief. This YouTube event included Executive Producer and story writer Steven Spielberg,  the film’s stars, Director Richard Donner, screenwriter Chris Columbus, and Cyndi Lauper, who did the popular song from the soundtrack. Spielberg, for his part said the problem has been coming up with a viable story after 35 years that “holds water.”

Chris and Dick and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s. So until we do, people are just gonna have to look at this a hundred times.

Donner, for his part offered: “How are you gonna find seven miserable kids like this again that are all new and fresh?”

While this might be a problem, it certainly wouldn’t be insurmountable. The real task is coming up with a story that would measure up with those fans who place the film in such high esteem…such as myself.
