Still No Plans for ‘The Defenders’ Season 2, Says Netflix VP

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”1279″ img_size=”400×300″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The Defenders brought together four superheroes from their standalone shows on Netflix. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. This mini-series consisting of eight episodes was highly anticipated. Every time a hint, trailer, or twitter post popped up, we fans ate up. I was so utterly excited to see these four superheroes get together and see how their personalities meshed. How would Luke and Jessica act towards each other after their history? What would Daredevil be like in the aftermath of season two’s finale? And would the Punisher make an appearance, since he was teased in one of the last trailers? Spoiler: unless you count the small teaser at the end of the series, he never showed up in the actual show.

Unfortunately, the Defenders did not live up to the hype. That being said, I didn’t think it was terrible. There were some good aspects, such as Matt Murdock’s interactions with Jessica Jones and there were some really heartfelt moments throughout the eight episodes. Overall, though; the first few episodes were slow, Sigourney Weaver’s villain was nothing to boast about, and I found myself tired of the old trope that yet again Daredevil is making foolish decisions when Elektra is involved.

Since the Defenders release, people have wondered if we’re going to be seeing a second season. Despite being lackluster, we would assume they’d be another season – after all, Iron Fist got one (which, is actually looking pretty good now). But, it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen anytime soon and the reason isn’t entirely the lackluster reviews. Netflix’s VP Cindy Holland explained that the biggest reason they haven’t prioritized a second season of the Defenders, is because,

“The biggest issue was the timing of production and launching of The Defenders, because what that meant is we had to shut down all of the shows, so all the actors [could] be available.”

Basically, if we got a second season, this would mean delaying production on the standalone shows and honestly, it was painful enough waiting for a second season of Jessica Jones and at this point, it’s torture waiting for a third season of Daredevil.

Personally, what I’d love more is to see the character interact in each other’s individual shows. I loved all the cameos in Luke Cage season 2 such as Foggy and Danny Rand. Even name dropping Karen Page was exciting. If we could get more of that in the show, I think it’d work a lot better than a second season of the Defenders. Fans shouldn’t fret though, as there is always the possibility of a spin-off show based on these standalone series, such as the Daughters of the Dragon and Moon Knight.

Iron Fist season 2 premieres September 7th of this year and Daredevil season 3 is looking to be the last show to air in 2018, meaning the Punisher season 2 will most likely be early 2019.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
