Supernatural Elements to Return For Tomb Raider Sequel

Exclusive: The 2018 Tomb Raider film rebooted the franchise with star Alicia Vikander taking over the role of Lara Croft, previously played on screen by Angelina Jolie.  The film in my opinion was one of the better video game to film adaptations though most critics did not agree. The film would go on to gross $275 million at the global box office. After what many considered a disappointing box office, we were left wondering if a sequel would ever get made. A source of ours in the industry informed us that Warner Bros had not given up hopes on something Tomb Raider related, though they did not know if a sequel would get made or if the franchise might turn to streaming as a series.

Back in September it was reported by Deadline that a sequel was in the works with Vikander set to return and Ben Wheatley tapped to direct. Today we have learned from a close source that the sequel is going to introduce the supernatural elements that the video games and Jolie films explored so well.  Vikander’s Tomb Raider was very grounded but teased the supernatural with the tale of Himiko, the mythical Queen of Yamatai who was said to command the power over life and death. In the end it turns out that Himiko really held no supernatural elements and instead was the carrier of a deadly pathogen.

We are not sure how much of the sequel will be devoted to the supernatural but we are told the film will still be grounded but we will be getting some very “Trippy” elements in the film. No other plot details have been revealed at this time but the film is set to be released on March 19, 2021.
