$274.7 million dollars. That appears to be the magic number to get a sequel made. At least where Tomb Raider is concerned. The original 2001 Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie made $274.7 million dollars in box office receipts. That inspired a 2003 sequel that did much worse, taking in only $156.5 million. With the drop in sales, the Tomb Raider franchise swung and jumped off the cliff…at least until 2018.
That’s when Warner Bros. released a reboot for the franchise with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. This film didn’t do terribly but it didn’t do awesome business either. In fact, it made exactly the same as Angelina’s first go around as the character pulling in $274.7 Million Dollars. With that being the apparent magic number, Warner Bros. has moved forward with a sequel by bringing aboard Amy Jump to write the script.
Jump has written in collaboration with director Ben Wheatley in the past, writing both Free Fire and High Rise, for him as well as his next film titled Freak Shift. Since there has been no word yet on whether former director Roar Uthaug is returning, it is possicle that Wheatley might be in line for the job.
