The American online casino industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, and that is expected to continue throughout the decade. Studies have forecast a 12.2% compound annual growth rate between 2026 and 2032, showing the increasing popularity of online gambling.

However, there’s also been a steady rise in the popularity of sweepstakes casino games through the years. These platforms can be confused with typical online casinos, as they also allow users to play casino games such as slots, blackjack, and more. There are a myriad of options available to customers, who can see some of the best options by checking out https://sportshandle.com/sweepstakes-casinos/.

But while the interface might look familiar to online casino players, there are key distinctions which mean that sweepstakes casinos are their own entity. And while there has been pushback at state level recently, the market is still attracting bettors across the nation.

What makes a sweepstakes casino different?

Before expanding on recent developments, it’s important to clarify why sweepstakes casinos are different from other online casinos. While the latter gives players the opportunity to wager cash in games as you would in a physical casino, sweepstakes casinos use virtual currency instead, which is wagered for prizes.

To make matters more complicated, they use a dual currency system too. Players can either wager Gold Coins or Sweeps Coins, which both have clear distinctions. While players can play games using Gold Coins, they hold no monetary value at all – while you can purchase them, you cannot redeem them.

This means that they can only be used for entertainment purposes, to play social casino games for fun. On the other hand, Sweeps Coins are largely the equivalent of $1 each and are earned through promotions or from add-ons when purchasing Gold Coin packages.

It’s a system that gamers are all-too familiar with. While Gold Coins represent standard in-game currency which you can buy in bundles to play the game for fun, Sweeps Coins act as the premium currency which can be earned through promotions. The main difference to the casino model, though, is that the premium currency can be redeemed for cash once you meet a platform’s redemption limit.

Each casino will have different thresholds before you can redeem Sweeps Coins – the standard is 100 SC, while others will offer redemption at 50 SC and 75 SC. Unlike Gold Coins, you can’t purchase these coins. They can only be earned.

Why did they become so popular?

The United States has been the main driver in the popularity of sweepstakes casinos over the years. The market expanded at a compound annual growth rate of 89% between 2019 and 2022, and increased competition and options for players has only led to further developments.

Importantly, sweepstakes casinos remove the requirement to spend money, as while you can buy Gold Coins, you can use Sweeps Coins you have earned. Because of the ‘free’ way to play and the dual currency system, they fall under Sweepstakes Law instead of traditional gambling regulations, which allow prize-based promotions provided that participation is not restricted by a purchase.

Falling into that grey area means that sweepstakes casinos are typically more accessible for players throughout America. That has been the key driver behind their popularity, particularly in locations where traditional online casino games are more restricted or unavailable.

Sweepstakes casinos remain popular despite increasing regulation

Because of the unique position that sweepstakes casinos find themselves in, there has been some pushback in specific states. 2025 saw some introduce new laws to restrict the industry.

However, they remain accessible in the majority of states in 2026 and studies projected that the U.S. sweepstakes casinos market would generate $11 billion in gross revenue in 2025,up from $3.1 billion in 2022. It’s an indicator that their extensive library of games remains popular among players, in spite of the new legislation.
