SXSW: ‘Face to Facetime’ Review – A Humorous Take on Video Chatting Gone Wrong

Synopsis:

Claire takes the bold step of initiating a FaceTime call, only to discover Danny’s flaccid enthusiasm for her.
In our world nowadays, especially right now, face to face encounters don’t happen as much as they used to. For better or worse, apps such as Skype, FaceTime, and Zoom have made it so that personal interactions don’t necessarily have to be in person. However, it doesn’t make things any less awkward. In some cases, it makes it more awkward. Not only do we use this technology for chatting with friends and loved ones, podcasting, or having meetings, but some use these apps to find love. This short film, Face to Face Time perfectly portrays the awkwardness of trying to take a relationship to the proverbial next level. Somewhere along the way, talking to people became scary or we got lazy, but a huge majority of us have chosen to swipe our way to love. That being said, this short is an example of when swiping right goes wrong. Also, the timing couldn’t be more perfect as I’m sure this situation is happening in abundance due to our recent quarantining. Not only is this short funny but it shows a certain pressure and vulnerability that isn’t openly talked about. It’s very much, laugh at my pain. I found Face to Face Time to be very enjoyable.

Plot & Pace

Claire decides to brave a FaceTime call a guy she’s been dating and it doesn’t quite go the way she envisioned it in her head. Even though it has short runtime, it flows seamlessly and is edited very well.

Character & Chemistry

The awkward chemistry between Claire (Izzy Shill) and Danny (Sean Patrick McGowan) is perfect. Both characters are very relatable, one uninterested while the other is possibly trying to hard.
You can find the SXSW film entry right now on Prime Video until Wednesday, May 6th. Enjoy.
