It is kind of how Hollywood works. If you direct a successful film, especially under the Marvel banner, opportunities seem to multiply exponentially. Such is the life of Taika Waititi. After directing the popular Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi has been able to basically field whatever project he wants. However, with being so busy, he has not been able to work on long planned ventures. One such project is the long discussed spin-off his 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows.
This proposed film would focus on the werewolf characters from the film, which has been called We’re Wolves. Unfortunately, with his busy schedule these days, the title has been as far as he could get. That doesn’t mean that his project is dead, at least according to Waititi in a recent interview with IndieWire.
We’re Wolves is the film that [co-writer/director] Jemaine [Clement] and I keep pretending that we’re making. Every couple of years we say, we’re making this new film called ‘We’re Wolves,’ which follows the werewolves from the film. I feel bad to even mention it now because we keep saying it, [but] it’s like a dad saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll be home for Christmas.’ It’s not like we don’t want to come home for Christmas. We would like nothing more but we have a lot of shit going on.
While the prospects of We’re Wolves seems to be in a holding pattern, it’s not like their original film has not spawned other followups. The first was Wellington Paranormal, which depicts local law enforcement’s investigations into other supernatural occurrences in the area. In addition, FX has completed the first season of its television adaptation of What We Do in the Shadows. Both shows will be going into their second seasons so it seems like his schedule will not be easing up in the future. Not a bad problem to have.
If you were a fan of Waititi’s original film, are you disappointed that the We’re Wolves spin-off is apparently on a long holding pattern? Share your thoughts with us at GVNation.
