Taika Waititi Addresses Whether or Not ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Will Pass the Torch

Taika Waititi breathed new life into the MCU Thor franchise and after Thor: Ragnarok, fans wanted more. Thor is the first MCU character to get a fourth titular film and he’s not going to be alone. Natalie Portman not only returns as Jane, but she’ll be making her debut as Mighty Thor. The Mighty Thor comic series ran from 2015 to 2018 and imagined Jane picking up Mjolnir when Thor had set it down.

We’ve seen other characters in the MCU handle Thor’s mighty hammer. Vision hilariously and effortlessly picked it up in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And Captain America wielded it, after years of fans speculating that he could/wanting him to; in Avengers: Endgame. Now, it’s Mighty Jane’s turn. But, how does Thor feel about this and will Waititi be following Mighty Thor’s journey in the comics?

Waititi explained in an interview:

“We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane… because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that. And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’… I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.”

The Disney Plus Hawkeye series was essentially Clint Barton passing the torch to Kate Bishop. And Black Widow’s solo film pretty much did the same thing with showing the audience that Yelena would be our Black Widow, as opposed to Natasha. So, Waititi isn’t wrong in understanding that fans would speculate that this Thor film would someone do the same. We’ll have to wait to find out!
