The General Grievous cameo in Tales of the Empire is certainly a fine addition to his collection. Having been introduced in 2003’s miniseries Star Wars: Clone Wars, his most notable appearances have been in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith and 2008’s The Clone Wars series. While fans believed General Grievous got “nerfed” in the latter and his character faded out of the main story by season 5, the latest anthology series Tales of the Empire is a reminder that this character is not one to be messed with.
Personally, General Grievous is a favorite of mine and no matter what others say, his character in The Clone Wars was still a standout. And while there are many battles to reflect on, the massacre of the Nightsisters on Dathomir remains one of the deadliest acts the cyborg general has enacted. While the episode in the show did a good job in showing how devastating this moment was, its effect has been showcased in other medians, such as in the Fallen Order video game with the character Merrin and Morgan Elsbeth’s motivations in both Ahsoka and Tales of the Empire.
In the latter, General Grievous is terrifying. While only in the show for about 5 minutes, his minutes on screen pack a punch. Not only is the massacre darker looking, but Grievous is without mercy as he slays several Nightsisters – including Morgan’s mother. His cackling laughter and taunting “RUN” as the Nightsisters flee and fight for their lives is haunting. The character General Grievous can only exist within the Star Wars universe up until a certain point, so it was a welcomed moment for fans to see him pop up on a flashback. Sure, this was meant to showcase Morgan’s motivations in joining the Empire, but for fans, it really was all about General Grievous.
Hopefully, Star Wars will see there’s still an interest in this menacing character and we can get more flashbacks or even the unreleased episodes from The Clone Wars. I wouldn’t even be against an audiobook or an origin story?
