A computer monitor displays a screen recording interface with a landscape image; "Best Screen Recorder" text appears below, and a thumbs-up icon is shown above the monitor.

Looking for a suitable screen recorder to record gameplays, tutorial videos, online courses, or even live sports content such as FIFA World Cup matches? Over the past few months, we’ve spent hours hands-on testing 30 popular screen recording software on both Windows and Mac, and shortlisted the 5 best screen recorders here, covering free, low-cost subscription, and one-time purchase options, for your reference.

*We ranked the tools based on overall user experience, features, cost performance, and forum feedback.

How We Tested These Screen Recorders

To eliminate the influence of hardware configuration on the test results, we tested each screen recorder on two mainstream devices. Before testing, we closed all background apps, emptied system caches, and unified system settings.

    Windows: i5 processor, 16GB RAM, 1080P monitor, Windows 11

Mac: M1 chip, 8GB RAM, official stable macOS version

Since Bandicam is Windows-only, all full tests were carried out only on the Windows device. The other five tools were fully tested on both Windows and Mac.

We simulated four major recording scenarios, including tutorials, gameplays, demos, and online courses. Our test covers key features including recording quality, audio recording, real-time annotation, capture frame adjustment, and built-in editing.

Note that all results and evaluations are based on our hands-on testing and official public information online.

While screen recordings are ideal for capturing complete workflows, there are times when a single image is all you need. Whether you’re documenting software settings, highlighting an error message, or creating a quick tutorial, taking a windows screenshot can be faster than recording an entire video. With simple editing tools for cropping, annotations, and highlighting, screenshots are a practical addition to any content creation workflow.
