Penny and Leonard may have been endgame in The Big Bang Theory, but Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki’s real-life relationship didn’t turn out the same way. The two stars of the long-running geeky show dated early on in the series before calling it quits. You can imagine how that would probably be like to have to not only act alongside your ex, but also have romantic scenes with the person you were broken up with.
In a recent interview with Cuoco, she talks about dating Galecki for two years during the show:
“So we dated really early on for almost two years. It was very early on in the show. I remember when we did the pilot, I was just crushing so hard on Galecki. … I had such a crush on him, and I didn’t think he felt that way about me.”
Just as the real-life couple were breaking up, Penny and Leonard were getting together. Cuoco talks about those awkward sec scenes just week after breaking up:
“I remember when we broke up, and it was a little sensitive for a minute, but I remember those weeks that Chuck [Lorre] had written these episodes, and suddenly our characters were sleeping together every other second.”
Cuoco was able to laugh about it, revealing in the interview that she and Galecki thought the show creator Chuck Lorre was doing that “on purpose [just to] f*ck with us”. Cuoco was in good spirits about it and it would be something she and Galecki would joke about. In fact, it made Cuoco love Chuck’s sense of humor even more.
Kaley had nothing but good things to say about Galecki and in fact expressed:
“We got together and just fell mad for each other for about two years. But then we broke up. Luckily, Johnny and I came out of it so brilliantly. We are closer today than we ever were.”
Cuoco and Galecki are good friends still to this day. Currently, Cuoco is married to Karl Cook and voices Harley Quinn in HBO Max’s animated show Harley Quinn. She also stars in HBO Max’s upcoming miniseries The Flight Attendant.
