Jim Carrey is Chip Douglas, cable installer. Raised on television sitcoms, he wants life to look just like My Three Sons. And when he meets single guy Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick), he sees his chance for some serious male bonding. But Chip’s idea of friendship – which includes physical assault, a game of ‘Porno Password’ and a medieval joust – may be hazardous to Steven’s health. In Chip’s own immortal words, “I can be your best friend…or your worst enemy.” Directed by Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder, Zoolander), and co-starring Leslie Mann, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson.

    Video Quality

The new 30th Anniversary 4K UHD Blu-Ray of The Cable Guy offers a substantial uptick in quality over the previous Blu-Ray from 2019. There is no Blu-Ray copy included in this new set if you are not yet 4K UHD capable and were hoping to future-proof. The Blu-Ray that we previously purchased was pleasing enough, but has been in need of an upgrade for some time. Fans will be thrilled with the brand new 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative in its original 2.39:1 aspect ratio in 2160p HDR/Dolby Vision. Longtime readers will know how fond we are of Sony not only for tackling their catalog in 4K with a peerless ferocity, but nearly always delivering a level of quality that is hard to top.

One of our favorite aspects of this transfer is the utilization of Dolby Vision/HDR. This format really commands a firmer handling of the contrast between light and dark, which is especially helpful with the finale at the satellite at night. The black levels are especially impressive in this presentation, maintaining a deep and inky appearance with excellent detail. The highlights are similarly more defined with the daytime scenes more pure and balanced with no instances of blooming to be found. Colors are more complex, natural, and accurate to what was crafted by the creative team. Skin tones appear way more complex and natural than the Blu-Ray with healthy doses of fine detail apparent on faces such as pores and age lines.

This fresh transfer sports a picture containing sumptuous film grain that resolves perfectly without being clumpy or unnatural. Even the darkest corners and the toughest gradients do not overrun the picture with loose grain or banding, a feat not always so easily accomplished. As usual, Sony has stayed away from any digital tinkering on this transfer, so this disc is free of DNR, compression artifacts, and other encode issues. The modern production design, makeup, and backgrounds are presented with perfect clarity and texture. Take a look at the inside of Steven’s apartment to see an array of minute details that are visible thanks to the 4K resolution. The clothing and textural output on display is simply marvelous to behold with everything rendering without any issues. This is a welcome upgrade which fans should really love exploring.

    Audio Quality

This 4K UHD Blu-Ray upgrades the audio with a new Dolby Atmos track that gives the film an expansive soundscape with a distinct sense of place and character. Audio purists should not worry, though, as the 4K UHD Blu-Ray provides the original soundtrack in impeccable lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Both of these tracks on the 4K UHD really dazzle in their own ways, but we are glad that Sony is one of the companies that realizes original audio should be a choice for fans who want it while still delivering something special for audiophiles. Dialogue is crisp and clear without ever getting overpowered by the music or sound effects. The film thrives when it comes to the music, as the score from John Ottman aids the tone considerably, never faltering when it comes to fidelity.

With the Atmos track, you get some tasteful expansion while recognizing this is a dark comedy without a constant barrage of sounds. Throughout the film, you are treated to activity that extends to the surrounds, rears and overhead speakers to make the world feel more three-dimensional and all-encompassing in a way that transports you. The sounds up above mostly come in the form of environmental effects such as rain. The low end effects from the subwoofer wake things up and give many moments extra weight to enrich the experience. Atmospheric sound effects are rendered accurately within the mix so that directionality is never an issue. The original DTS-HD 5.1 track is obviously not quite as all-encompassing as the Atmos track, but it handles the material exactly as you would want with stability and power. Sony understood the assignment and delivered without issue. Optional English, English SDH, and tons of other subtitles are provided.

    Special Features

    • Audio Commentary: Director Ben Stiller, Judd Apatow, and Jim Carrey provide a pretty amusing commentary track in which they reflect on the production of the film, shooting locations, changes made to the script, working under time and budget constraints, and much more that makes for a good listen.
    • Tribeca Festival 30th Anniversary Conversation with Ben Stiller & Matthew Broderick: A 26-minute panel from the 2026 Tribeca Festival in which the director and star of the movie reflect on the legacy of the film, how they got involved with the project, the atmosphere on set, the editing process, and more.
    • Gag Reel: A nearly seven-minute collection of flubbed moments, laughing fits, ruined takes, and more.
    • Deleted & Extended Scenes: A 24-minute collection of unused scenes and moments is provided here in very rough quality.
    • HBO First Look – The Making of The Cable Guy: A classic 24-minute promotional program in which the cast and creative team take viewers through the film with bite-sized anecdotes throughout about how the movie came together.
    • Rehearsals: There is 17 minutes of rehearsal footage for five scenes provided.
    • Nightmare Camera Test: An unsettling minute-long camera test with Carrey looking very creepy.
    • Leslie Mann Audition (2:59)
    • Music Video – “Leave Me Alone” by Jerry Cantrell (4:34)
    • Theatrical Trailer (2:28)

    Final Thoughts

The Cable Guy occupies an interesting space in the career of Jim Carrey, as it represents a much darker side of the comedian that was exponentially more aggressive than the films he cut his teeth on earlier in the decade. That’s not to say that the movie is bad—far from it. In the intervening thirty years, it has found its audience of sickos who love dark, occasionally unpleasant humor that is much smarter than many gave it credit for at the time of release. Matthew Broderick plays a great straight man to Carrey’s unhinged performance, creating a dynamic that is hilarious and very memorable. It is a film that has aged very well, and hopefully even more people find their way to this dark gem. Sony Pictures has released a 4K UHD Blu-Ray featuring a fantastic A/V presentation and a great selection of special features, both new and old, in a sterling SteelBook. This is a must-buy for fans of the film. Recommended

The Cable Guy is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray SteelBook.
