Video Quality
The Cutting Edge: Going For The Gold debuts on Blu-Ray with a 1080p transfer in its original 1.85:1 which appears to be from a solid older master from MGM. Colors are the standout aspect with a pleasantly saturated frame with a potent vibrancy within the environments, costumes, and production design. Black levels are decent with no egregious signs of crush and only mild banding. Highlights are in good shape without lighting getting too hot. Compression artifacts and other digital anomalies are somewhat rare.
Due to the relative recency of the title, this holds up a bit better than other recent catalog titles from the company. The picture retains its natural film grain without major swarming, clumping, or density fluctuations. The transfer is handily defined with welcome clarity when it comes to spotlighting background detail. The transfer does not show unacceptable signs of damage or digital manipulation, even if it is clear this is a dated master. MGM has given this one a passable exhibition.
Audio Quality
MGM brings us this new Blu-Ray with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix that brings this movie to life swimmingly. Dialogue comes through clearly without losing a battle to any competing element. There are a few odd moments when a couple of words sound like they are talking underwater, but this is blink-and-you’ll-miss-it territory. The environmental effects transport you to the arena where the competition is being held. The sound effects add some texture to the proceedings. The score establishes the mood for the narrative, and it emanates with a strong fidelity. MGM has done a nice enough job here. There are optional English SDH subtitles provided.

Final Thoughts
The Cutting Edge: Going For The Gold is the follow-up effort to a film that was merely passably entertaining to begin with. While the male lead in that one was obnoxious, we would take him any day of the week over the male lead in this installment. He is written to have next to no redeeming qualities, and there is no underlying charm to the performance to make up for the deficiencies in the script. We have some affection for Christy Carlson Romano, but even her character is poorly developed with many horrendous moments of her own. If you have to watch one, stick with the original. MGM has brought this film to Blu-Ray with a fine A/V presentation but nothing in the way of special features. Recommended for established fans only.
