Fans of Michael J. Fox and aficionados of the supernatural genre will be thrilled to know that Universal Pictures is in the process of rebooting one of Fox’s lesser-known treasures—The Frighteners. Originally released in 1996, this horror-comedy is set to undergo a contemporary retelling, breathing new life into a captivating ghostly tale.
According to Giant Freakin Robot, the reboot will stay true to the essence of the original, revolving around a psychic investigator portrayed by Fox, blessed (or perhaps cursed) with the ability to communicate with spirits. As he grapples with his extraordinary gift, he embarks on a mission to solve a series of spine-chilling supernatural murders, blending humor and horror for an engaging cinematic experience.
In the first rendition, Michael J. Fox brought the character of Frank to life, a former architect whose life takes a surreal turn after a tragic loss. The trauma leaves him with the eerie ability to see and talk to ghosts, leading him to become a paranormal investigator, offering his services to those haunted by restless spirits. However, a sinister twist unfolds when he discovers a malevolent ghost responsible for a string of brutal murders, marked by mysterious numbers on the victims’ foreheads, much like the ones he witnessed during his wife’s passing.
The decision to revisit The Frighteners might raise some eyebrows, considering the original film’s modest success upon release. Nevertheless, Universal Pictures appears to heed the timeless wisdom imparted by Steven Spielberg through the iconic film Jaws in 1975: horror films, often made on modest budgets, possess the potential for substantial returns at the box office. With advancements in technology and filmmaking, this reboot is poised to captivate audiences with a refreshed take on the classic ghostly narrative, proving that some tales never truly fade away—they just evolve and haunt the silver screen once more.
