The Game Awards 2018 Winners Roundup

With 2018 coming to a close the game awards have celebrated the best of the best we’ve gotten this year and done its fair share of hyping up releases for next year and beyond. I’ll be sure to talk about the mountain of trailers we got in another article but for now, let’s go through each and every winner whilst I give you my thoughts on them. Despite what I may think I will say before we start a huge congratulations to every game and developer that was nominated or won at this years game awards because it has been a pretty incredible year for gamers these past 12 months.

We’ll start off listing a few games that you may not have heard of but are definitely Diamonds in the rough. The award for best action game went to Dead Cells by developers Motion Twins, Best Debut Indie game went to Messenger by Sabotage Studios, best Family Game went to Overcooked 2 by Team17 and finally, best strategy game went to Into the Breach by Subset Games. I personally haven’t had the chance to play any of these games but after catching up on their coverage and reviews I have to say they all look like worthy contenders for their respective awards. I would highly recommend you check out all 4 of these titles if you’ve never seen or heard of them before because each one looks to be pretty damn fun in their own unique way. A relativly small but very strong way to kick off our Game Awards round up but now let’s get into some AAA titles which took home some of the awards biggest prizes.

E-Sports and Overwatch

I don’t follow E-Sports in any way, shape or form so most of the related E-Sports awards went right over my head but here are a few that did catch my attention. Overwatch won best E-Sports game which is hardly a surprise and seemed well deserved seeing as that game has pretty much fully traversed into the E-Sports community. SonicFox won the best E-Sports player award and unrelated to E-Sports, but I didn’t know where to put this, Ninja won best content creator of the year award. Again, hardly a surprise considering everything Ninja has accomplished this year and despite your thoughts on him, you can’t deny the work he’s put in this year to earn that reward.

Hunting Monsters in the best RPG of the Year

Another thoroughly deserved award this year went to Monster Hunter World for the best Role Playing Game of the year. A game with gigantic ambitions, gigantic monsters, and gigantic battles Monster Hunters World has done extremely well this year from a very strong beta to a great launch and a fantastic player response Monster Hunter Worlds was not only one of the best games released this year but easily the best RPG of 2018.

The next 3 awards are admittedly for niche audience’s but still thoroughly deserve their recognition for their respective awards. The best fighting game went to Dragonball Fighterz developed by Arc Systems, the best indie game award went to Celestia, and finally, the best racing/sports game went to Forza Horizon 4 by Turn 10 Studios. Now its time to talk about the kings of The Game Awards which totally stole the show.

Red Dead Redemption cleaning up at the Awards

We all knew Red Dead 2 was going to clean up at the game awards and unsurprisingly it didn’t disappoint. Red Dead took home the awards for best narrative, best audio design, best music/score, and finally, Roger Clark took home the award for best performance as Arthur Morgan. All of these were incredibly well deserved especially if you watched the show and listened to that incredible live performance of just some of Red Dead’s music. I think we all expected Red Dead 2 to pick up a certain Game of the Year Award, and I’ll be honest I was surprised it didn’t take that trophy home but the game that did was more than worthy of that Title.

Game of the Year…

So the reason we were all watching. The award to end all awards. Game of the Year. This year has had a huge number of fantastic games this year, and personally, for me, any number of games could have taken this title home and God of War is one of those games.

God of War is a beautiful reinvention of Kratos with phenominal gameplay, incredible graphics, and a genuinely fantastic story. The guys over at Ready at dawn and daybreak games did an incredible job and they thoroughly deserve this award along with the award for best game direction which God of War also picked up. I’ll be perfectly honest I never expected God of War to win game of the year because not only was it going toe to toe with Red Dead this year but it’s also a PlayStation exclusive yet when it was announced I was pleasantly surprised with the result.

As for the games that didn’t pick up any awards this year personally I would have liked to see Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Spiderman pick up some titles and I personally think Destiny 2: Forsaken definitely deserved the award for the best ongoing game but thats just me.

So what did you think of this years Game Awards? Did your favorite games pick up the awards you think they deserved this year r were there any games you thought were robbed of their titles? Lets us know down below or over on our twitter.
