Oscar Issac, who is currently starring in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as bigshot pilot Poe Dameron, has just secured himself a major deal. He will be producing and starring in The Great Machine. This is Legendary Entertainment’s adaptation of Ex Machina, penned by comic book writer, Brian K. Vaughan.
Legendary has only recently acquired the rights to Machina, which falls within the parameters of their three-year TV and film contract with Vaughan. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the writers of Kristen Stewart’s recently released thriller, Seberg, will write the script.
Issac will have the opportunity to work alongside his longtime manager, Jason Spire, to produce the film. The duo previously collaborated on the production of MGM’s Operation Finale.
Vaughan’s comic debuted in 2004 under Wildstorm, which is a publishing imprint of DC Comics. The story centers around a former superhero named Mitchell Hundred who is elected mayor of NYC following 9/11. Hundred’s power? Communicating with and having command over mechanical devices.
The comic’s storyline features politics and government-related issues rather than focusing on heroic deeds. Fear not, there is a growing threat lurking in the background – one only fit for a superhero. Speaking about the comic, Vaughan admitted (via Wikipedia) that the story was
“Born out of my anger with what passes for our current political leadership (on both sides of the aisle).”
After playing one of the galaxy’s best pilots, Issac will star as Hundred in the upcoming film.
Along with The Dark Knight, Legendary Entertainment is also responsible for some big-screen comic book adaptations, like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises, 300, 300: Rise of An Empire, Watchmen, Jonah Hex, and Superman Returns.
