Ever since the full merger has gone into effect between Warner Bros and Discovery, there has been nothing but complaint after complaint when it comes to the decisions of David Zaslav. In most cases, the concern is completely valid, such as the cancellation of various projects. But in turn, Zaslav gave great answers to those specific concern: starting over so they can have a more cohesive universe. Yet people are still saying DC Comics needs to be traded off or sold off to another company since WBD doesn’t know what to do with them.
Naturally, Warner Bros. Discovery does not know what to do with DC content right now. The full merger just happened not too long ago – April 8, 2022. It has only been four months since the Warner Bros Discovery team started putting everything together, and not too long ago Zaslav explained his dissatisfaction with how everything was going with the old DCEU. And they were the same concerns we had when the old regime was in effect.
This is where hypocrisy comes into play with the fandom. We all had the same issues that Zaslav had about not using Superman and how the overall universe doesn’t feel connected. Of course, some others do not care if the movies connect; this is why Zaslav still has Matt Reeve’s Batman and the Todd Phillips Joker. They are both finically and critically successful while also trying to cater between the fans that want the connectivity of the films and those that don’t care, yet we are still complaining.
People being upset with multiple projects being canceled by Zaslav like Batgirl is understandable. But, did we not as a collective say, “that there either needs to be a hard reboot or a soft reboot?” (Minus the Snyder-Verse of course lol) The way Zaslav has been operating has been getting rid of the old and the things that do not perform well; the opposite of what the old regime was, which was to say everything was good and hope for the best. That kind of thinking was one of the reasons the DC fandom is so divided to begin with!
We complain about them putting out mediocre film after mediocre film, but when Zaslav says he wants to focus on quality over quantity and acts on this promise, people lose their minds and say things like, “They don’t know what they are doing” and “WBD needs to sell DC Comics to someone that knows what to do.” As previously stated, Warner Bros. Discovery just started planning. If anything, they haven’t even started yet – they are still cleaning up the mess that was the old regime of the DCEU. Give it some time, and when they come up with a plan, and if it is not executed, then we can say things like, “they need to sell it off.” Don’t just give up on them prematurely. Remember, this is a whole new Warner Brothers.
The main issue with the old DCEU was having multiple head coaches instead of having one main coach controlling the players of the DCEU. Everyone had ideas about what they wanted and because there wasn’t a single entity controlling all those ideas making the whole premise of the DCEU convoluted. In effect, all those leaders that were in charge of the DCEU created a toxic relationship between them and their actors. All of this was due to a true lack of leadership for the franchise, creating an overall insufficient universe. With that said, there was some good content like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. But overall, they couldn’t get the universe to be as connected as they wanted it to be and David Zaslav saw this and decided to make a bunch of changes. A “main voice” to help filter the bad ideas and to help control any unnecessary conflicts.
