The Long Night Grows Longer: ‘Thrones’ Not Set to Release Until Summer 2019

UGH. It’s been over 365 days since Cersei betrayed the Northern and Targaryen armies, since Jon and Dany had #BoatSex, and since the Hound threatened the FrankenMountain. There was a time that we thought the 8th, and final, season of Thrones would be coming in winter 2018, then that was shut down. Then we believed spring 2019, partially because of a cryptic Maisie Williams post, but more importantly because HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys said the show would return in the first of 2019. However, he seems to have been quite literal in that statement.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Thrones visual effects supervisor, Joe Bauer, discussed his work for season 7’s Emmy Awards, but he also gave us a big hint as to when we’ll be returning to Westeros. “In two years, we’ll be eligible for season 8 work, which we’re beginning now” Bauer said. TWO. YEARS. That means the 2020 Emmys, not the 2019 Emmys, meaning the bulk of the episodes would be aired of the 2019 deadline: May 31st. “We’re going to be tolling away until May 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away” Bauer went on to say. EIGHT OR NINE MONTHS AWAY. Now, given Bauer’s comments, the earliest we can hope is late May 2019; however, I wouldn’t be shocked if ‘Thrones’ didn’t come back until June or July. I’m sorry to have ruined your weekend folks.

However, Bauer did go on to say that the prequel is going to begin shooting in February! When asked about the ending of the current series, Bauer said ““I thought it was really brave, I thought it’d be interesting to see. It’s very true to what ‘Thrones’ is, and knowing how it ends, I don’t actually see how it could end any other way. I think the whole series has aimed toward this. I obviously can’t say what it is. I think there will be divisions because people have grown to identify and like and hate various characters, so everybody has their version of how they want it to end based on those things, but looking at it objectively, I think the way it ends is the way it must end, so I’m just going to leave it at that.”

It sounds like the series’ last season will be epic, and if the wait is going to be make it better, then reluctantly, I will wait. Besides, that just gives everyone time to binge and catch up!

Is this news heartbreaking? Or can you handle the wait? Are you excited for the series finale of Game of Thrones? Let us know in the comments below!
