The Mandalorian Chapter 16 Review: Bittersweet and Full of Mandalorians

Season two has come to a close and it was a satisfying conclusion. Before I go any further, keep in mind that there will be slight spoilers to this review. Though, I will try not to spoil the big moments in Chapter 16 of The Mandalorian.

Slight Spoilers

The season two finale of The Mandalorian concludes Din Djarin’s quest to retrieve Grogu back from Moff Gideon. He’s rounded his troops, which include Bo-Katan and Koska. It’s a Mandalorian reunion and while we all expected a bit of a heated meeting between Mando and Boba Fett, the tensions came from Bo-Katan and Boba meeting. It was a quarrel quickly squashed because there were more important things to do. Like rescue Baby Yoda. And to retrieve the Darksaber.

‘The Rescue’ started off with some classic Star Wars footage – flying through space with laser beams being shot in all directions. We learned a good deal about Moff Gideon’s Dark Troopers and why he needed Baby Yoda to begin with. I will admit that the whole thing gave me Age of Ultron vibes, but it was executed well. Although, the Dark Troopers were disposed of by an unexpected person and finding out who that person is will certainly make any Star Wars fan scream with glee.

I could go on about so many things. The badass women who kicked ass this episode. The inward struggle of tradition Bo-Katan faced at the end of the episode. Giancarlo Esposito proving his worth as Moff Gideon. But, really, for me; this episode was all about Mando and Grogu. While I’m sure their ending will make some fans excited, it felt bittersweet to me. It was an ending many of us saw coming, but it still felt like the end of a chapter. Granted, a new one awaits. There will be plenty for Din to learn in season three of the Mandalorians and exploring that is truly exciting. But, the best scene came from a silent understanding between the two who started this entire journey. And for that, I don’t know if the show will ever be the same.

Rating: 4.5/5

The Mandalorian’s second season finale was emotional, packed with badassery, and full of surprises – as well as a look to the future of the show and the franchise. Star Wars has never been more alive than it is in The Mandalorian. Especially with all of the spinoff shows coming. The end of The Mandalorian also teased another spinoff and it was probably the most badass end-credit scene in the whole show. I love it and I can’t wait for more.
