Marvel Studios dropped the first teaser trailer yesterday for their upcoming November theatrical release of The Marvels. The film follows up the 2019 Avengers: Endgame predecessor Captain Marvel, as well as Marvel’s upcoming Nick Fury led drama Secret Invasion. Fury and Carol Danvers are reunited in the present day, along with Disney+ veterans Monica Rambeau (Photon, Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel, Iman Vellani). The teaser debuted to a staggering 10 million views in less than a day on YouTube, and it’s packed with easy-to-miss details that may hint what to expect from the film. Here are a few.

    Tied Together

In multiple sequences in the trailer, the main trio are seen trading locations with each other as one of them uses their powers. The process seems random, and isn’t limited to proximity. In one scene, Kamala and Monica seem to trade places from planets away, with Kamala ending up in a spacesuit opposite Nick Fury, and Monica facing off against what appears to be a sect of Kree, the alien race introduced in the first film. In another, Carol ends up in Kamala’s bedroom, which is decorated wall to wall with cutouts of Captain Marvel stickers and adverts. Kamala ends up with the short end of the stick this time, facing down monsters in what seems to be the hallway of a spaceship. She’s accompanied only by the returning feline-monster Goose, and is fittingly shocked. Fury won’t be thrilled, either.

Such a concept would mark uncharted territory for the MCU. With the recent lackluster response to entries like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the already infamous Thor: Love and Thunder, perhaps what Marvel needs is a breath of fresh air. This has the potential to be just that.

    Powers Peeled Back

The new teaser also provides us with a new look at the unfamiliar powers of Monica Rambeau. Going in, we’re plenty used to Captain Marvel and her array of high-flying abilities. We also got an extensive look at Kamala’s numerous properties in the first season of her show, in which she morphs her limbs and employs the power of healing.

In a clip from the teaser, Rambeau explains that she can “manipulate light energy” as an enemy attempts to stab her. Only, where the weapon would usually make contact, Rambeau’s body becomes transparent and encased in a wavy blue glow of sorts. The weapon goes right through, leaving her unharmed. It seems that her character may be in line with her comic counterpart here, where manipulating that energy allows her to avoid hits like these. Not only that, but in the comics she controls many forms of energy by physically assuming them, allowing for heroic feats in power and heroism. With this film, it appears that Marvel is dedicated to adhering to their comic counterparts for this story in more ways than one.

    Danvers Déjà Vu

Carol Danvers dons a brand new costume, and it’s a real blast from the past. Captain Marvel’s newest suit, seen during the spaceship battle sequence towards the end of the teaser, is a callback to the superheroes’ origins. Before she was Captain Marvel, she was Mar-Vell. Some may remember Mar-Vell as a separate character in the 2019 film, played by Annette Bening. But she’s (sometimes he) been around since December 1967, where the hero debuted in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Superheroes #12.

This new suit, with a simple two-tone design and a massive logo on the chest, is a modernized interpretation of Mar-Vell’s classic suits of old. It keeps the iconic blue and red colors whilst also darkening them, and contrasting those tones with the flagrant gold of the emblematic chest piece.

The suit is one of two that Danvers wears in the film. The other is a more familiar, slightly updated version of the suit she wore in Endgame. Only now, the sleeves are cut off at the elbows, as well as the fingers on the gloves. It’s a more natural, free-flowing look for a hero who’s worst days are behind her… or so she thinks.

The newer suit, as well as the teaser, has already been a heavy topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. Only time will tell if the anticipation pays off. Until then, we can continue to pick apart the teasers as they release and share in the excitement for a new Marvel team-up adventure together.
