‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Review – Read Between The Pills

There’s something terrifying about a new film from your favorite trilogy. Why? Do we need more to the story? We wait, watching the new trailer, scared of what they will make of a film we loved. Even if the trailer is epic there is still a fear lingering around what someone can do with a beloved character, brought back, rebooted. And resurrecting Neo, our one, our cult classic PVC wearing flying hero of The Matrix, there is of course a worrisome notion that a producer took a blue pill instead of a red.

The Matrix Resurrections is here and you are about to be given a new choice. Do you hate it or do you love it? The film stands there, offering up those two pill choices…but I took one they didn’t offer. Neither. I am still undecided at this moment which door to open.

The film itself, the fourth installment in the Matrix trilogy, directed by Lana Wachowski, brought us back to a world we assumed we’d never see again. The story line was tied up, Neo was the one, fade to black. But here we are again, Neo is alive. And the reasoning behind it all, was genius.

The Matrix Resurrections story at its core is truly perfect. It’s so hard because I don’t want to spoil a thing. I want to tell you and show you how intricate this tale is woven into the fabric of the code of The Matrix but I can’t. You need to just go into the film without a preconceived notion. Don’t read the spoilers, or the wiki pages, just dial in and take the call. I’m so glad I watched it without really knowing what was bound to happen because let me tell you, the first scene alone had my brain racing. What I can tell you is that the core reasoning behind this new addition hits home and truly adds to whole lore of The Matrix. It’s almost as if Neo is back, trying to save us from the machines he told us to avoid in the first place. He’s back to show you the truth again, if you want to see.

Here’s where I tell you that the new film, regardless of the epic genius behind the story itself, falls to the ground. Like I said, the story, the characters, the reasoning, is all there and it makes you want to fight through every scene, bullet time and all. But there’s something missing. It lacks a serious tone, the gritty feel, the essence of what made Matrix, The Matrix. It’s not there. I looked for that white rabbit in every scene and it simply was not anywhere to be found.

There is more humor, which wasn’t really there before. There’s horribly written dialogue that seems to want to be cheeky but is sprinkled between beautiful monologues that make me want to get some of the lines tattoo’d on me. The music blanketing the film is a Hallmark movie special score and should have been scrapped immedeatly. There are so some many things that made me wonder if this was simply a fan film. It sure feels like it. The action alone felt like a green screen mess. How is that possible though? The story and ideas are there but the execution was a program I cringed watching.

I know this film is going to be a line in the sand for some. It will the topic of debate for years to come. But you are allowed to be in the middle of the road. That’s where I am, standing here, looking at both the pills and honestly not choosing either. It was bad but it was good. As a Matrix fan of course I am hanging on but I’m being fair. I wanted to walk out of this film and be spinning, be flying with Neo and I’m okay admitting I didn’t. Matrix Resurrections has a lot of errors in the programming of what could have been a potential epic addition.

Here’s the thing. There is something still there in this film. It’s still fulfilling fans callbacks, it was true to the story and it still got me thinking. That’s the point. It got you thinking about the inner fabric of our wiring. The film may not have been good, sometimes I even laughed aloud at the absurdity but in the end I still felt like it got to me. And that’s something so interesting about Matrix Resurrections. It’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s a piece of modern art some of us will tilt our heads at and some people are going to lose their minds over.

I almost would love to make a pro and cons list about Matrix Resurrections but there’s no reason. The new film brought me back to a trilogy I love. Everyone everywhere still watches reboots of their favorite films, we still watch the live action remakes. Why? Because there is still a fan driven passion in returning to a world we love. And I will always love The Matrix.

My Final Matrix Thoughts?

What I leave you with is that I feel like this is a B- movie that may fluctuate between letter grading the more I watch it. Don’t get me wrong. I do want to watch it again. I want to connect the green symbols and find more.  It’s not for everyone. From what I’ve seen online it’s either hate or love. But listen, find it for yourself. Choose a pill, or don’t. But simply put your hand out. Trust me. It’s a world worth being plugged back into.
