‘The Mysterious Benedict Society’ Episode 3 Review – An Evil Twin or An Evil Clone?

I hope you’re enjoying this show so far, I know I am. I love a fun mystery. And just like the kids, I was left with tons of questions after the first two episodes. Mainly, who is mister blueberry pictured above and why does he look so much like Mr. Benedict? Is he an evil clone? An evil twin? Or perhaps he’s actually Benedict playing dress-up. Logic says, evil twin but is he actually evil, or is he evil because Benedict was presented as a being benevolent? Now, just like when I covered Invincible, I am trying my best not to research the source material. For one, I want to be surprised and two, they may not completely follow it anyway. Also, if L.D. Curtain is evil, what is his endgame? And does Benedict know more than he’s letting on? Well, some of these questions are answered in this episode but new and bigger questions appear.

Episode 3: Depends on the Wagon

“Work the system. The system works…if you work it.”

Things are getting very very interesting on the island. Loyalties are in question, plans are being uncovered, identities are being revealed, and you can in fact be kicked off the island. With Reynie seemingly being the leader of the group and intellectually standing out, he decides that the only way to see the original plan through is to become messengers. That means being the best of the best, but we still don’t know exactly what a messenger does and not everyone is excelling in the cult-like classes. Unfortunately, they learn that there is indeed a ranking system and if you fall too far to the bottom, it’s as Constance simply puts it, “Ferry on. Barge off.” After Reynie has an encounter with a familiar face that had no idea who he was, the kids make a connection with the condition and state Milligan is in. Furthermore, after listening to L.D. Curtain speak, it’s clear that he is manically charming, but charming nonetheless. That leads the very literal, Sticky to question the actions and past of Mr. Benedict as the kids learn some divisive new information. And as things seem to be somewhat dire for the girls, Kate displays why she is valuable by uncovering some secrets.

While the kids figure things out on their end, Benedict is having a slight breakdown as Number Two and Rhonda confirm the new information that they received from Reynie and company. A new character is introduced and with the new revelations, I wonder who he actually is and what role he will play. What is Curtain’s endgame? Also, what does Benedict stand to gain from all this? Are there minds being swept? Is there brainwashing going on? These questions and more are currently running through my head. This episode really opened up the show. I know it’s early, but with how much information we get with each episode, it seems as if an epic ending is very likely. I enjoyed this episode a great deal. It’s filled with adversity, more mystery, and it doesn’t wait until the end to reveal big twists or surprises. I also foresee the group dynamic being shaken up in the future, Sticky seems easily persuaded and Constance may be slightly unstable. The question arises that since none of them really know each other, who do you trust?

Final Thoughts

I’m really curious if there will be any overlap between what is wrong with Milligan and what L.D. Curtain may or may not be doing. And after this episode, Constance may end up being one of the biggest mysteries of the show. What are the voices and what do the phrases mean? Sleeper agent? Time will tell. Oh, and lastly, I think Curtain knows why the kids are there but I could be wrong.
