It was the battle of two spooky season offerings as The Nun II was working to repeat at number one while A Haunting In Venice was aiming to take the top spot. At the end of the day, The Nun II was victorious but it was only by a mere $200,000.
The Nun II is the number one movie at the box office for the second weekend in a row with a gross of $14.5 million, down an expected 55.4 percent from its opening weekend. Nothing too surprising here as the second weekend drop was expected to be heavy since the opening weekend was down from the record debut of its 2018 predecessor. The good news is that The Nun II is already a hit with a domestic take of $57.4 million and a global tally of $162.2 million. As for The Conjuring Universe as a whole, it has now brought its domestic gross to $742 million and a staggering $2.17 billion worldwide.
A Haunting In Venice had to settle for second place with a gross of $14.3 million, although the good news is that the film came in slightly above the $12 million opening it was tracking ahead of the weekend. The reason The Nun II came out ahead is that while A Haunting In Venice had a better Friday performance, The Nun II surged a bit with $6.25 million on Saturday versus the $5.4 million of the latest Hercule mystery.
Overseas, A Haunting In Venice debuted to $22.7 million from 51 overseas markets which made for a worldwide opening of $37.2 million. These movies have tended to perform better overseas and that looks to be the case for the third entry as well. The not-so-great news for the overall box office is that this is the second-worst year-to-date total tally for the top ten with a gross of $62.4 million.
In third place, we have The Equalizer 3, which had a better hold this weekend compared to weekend two with a gross of $7.2 million and a drop of 39.8 percent. Despite the bigger-than-expected fall last weekend, the third film will still be considered a hit all things considered because it’s also performing admirably overseas. The film added another $8.3 million from 54 overseas markets which brings it’s global haul to $132.4 million. The domestic take stands at $73.6 million.
Dropping to fourth place is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 with a gross of $4.8 million, down 52.5 percent from last weekend. Not much else to report here as the film will likely be a mere afterthought in a couple of weeks. The studio may see a tiny profit from the release but it’s nowhere near the heights of the word-of-mouth sensation of the first movie. To date, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 has grossed $18.6 million domestically and $24.4 million globally.
Rounding out the top five is Barbie with $3.8 million, down 33 percent in its ninth weekend of release. Barbie has kept its drops in this range since its release in January and it’s still playing in over 3,000 locations. That’s just a testament to how huge this film has been throughout the summer and now into the fall. It’s slowing down but the fact that it has been in the top five for nine weeks is simply amazing. To date, Barbie has grossed $626.2 million domestically and $1.4 billion worldwide.
