As they wrapped, we thought, ‘can’t wait for the next second!’.” A notion we’d all soon find out would never happen, as Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil were all canceled. While many shrugged off Iron Fist’s cancellation, it was Luke Cage’s and especially Daredevil’s that angered, upset, and worried fans. Many argue it’s Disney’s doing, others believe it’s Netflix. We all know that it’s, unfortunately, the shows in the crossfire, as none of the showrunners, actors, or production believed that it was time for their stories to end. Especially how well Daredevil’s third season did and how Luke Cage and Iron Fist were left with so many unanswered questions.
Although Netflix has not made the official announcement, fans believe that The Punisher and Jessica Jones will soon get the same treatment. Both were given new seasons and started filming before everything started happening, so at the time, everyone believed that we would have years of these shows to come, much like Agents of SHIELD, and the movie MCU. The Punisher literally premieres tomorrow and showrunner Steve Lightfoot comments on the second season’s finale serving as both a series wrap-up and giving it new momentum if there was to be a third season.
“We left season two in a place where my hope was everyone would just be like, fantastic, I can’t wait for Season 3,” Lightfoot tells SYFY WIRE. “And if we get to make Season 3, I’ll be absolutely delighted. I would love to make 10 seasons.”
As would I, Steve, as would I.
Marvel’s TV Head Jeph Loeb confirmed [what I had been thinking] that these cancellations are not the work of Marvel, but rather Netflix who is pulling the plug:
“That’s not our decision to make,” Loeb says. “We have a fantastic cast. We have a terrific writing team and extraordinary crew. Love working in New York… It’s ultimately going to be Netflix’s call, as it is with every show. We are beholden to the network and it’s the network who decides whether or not we’re going to do it.”
These cancellations and Netflix deciding to raise its prices certainly leaves a sour taste in many. The Punisher was not originally ordered when Marvel and Netflix first joined forces, but rather earned its own spin-off after Jon Bernthal’ explosive performance in Daredevil Season Two.
