The PS5‘s new design is certainly unique. After so many years of an all-black design (the PlayStation 1 was gray), the new addition has bold curves and a black and white color scheme. Not only is the design different than predecessors, it’s also quite larger than previous consoles. Why does it seem to be larger? Well, it seems that the reasoning is pretty practical.
PlayStation’s vice president of UX design, Matt MacLaurin explained [why it’s larger]:
“Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme.”
GameSpot has noted that some have speculated that a leaked patent that suggests Sony is building a cartridge to work with the PS5 is a reason as to why it’s larger. Another speculation is that it’s an external solid-state drive that is the reasoning for the size. Either way, I quite like the design. There’s been plenty of memes made, but just like the iPhone – why do we need so many new versions that look the same? Break the mold and get creative. It’s not always about the design either. The game-play, games offered, memory, and more should be what’s most impressive about the PS5. Time will tell.
What do you think about the PS5 design? Which PlayStation design is your favorite?
