‘The Shrink Next Door’ Episodes 1-3 Review – ‘Ferrell and Rudd Provide Powerhouse Performances, Hahn Shines Bright’

The Shrink Next Door (2021) Episodes 1-3

Starring: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Katherine Hahn

Plot Summary: Inspired by the true story of Marty and the therapist who turned his life around…then took it over. When he first meets Dr. Ike, Marty just wants to get better at boundaries. Over 30 years, he’ll learn all about them—and what happens when they get crossed

One can never predict these things, but I think if there is any kind of justice in this world, The Shrink Next Door will be the next big talked about Apple TV+ series. I will be reviewing the first three episodes, which drop on the platform November 12th (with episodes following weekly). Right away, the series does a nice job at establishing a tone that firmly has one foot in the real world but is ever so slightly off-kilter. Will Ferrell totally and completely slips into the role of Martin, a meek, mild-mannered man who is struggling with issues of self-confidence and the weight of a failing textile business. In fact, his own uncle is suing him for control of the business.

The showrunners make it look effortless how they totally absorb you into the world. This is thanks to top-notch production design, costumes and locales. Indeed, a pre-cleaned up New York is showcased in a way that feels authentic without being overly romanticized or underplayed. Of course, a lot of credit has to go to the writing which is engaging, rich in characters and makes you instantly hooked. For example, when I sat down to watch, I was only planning on watching one episode, but I found myself watching a lot more. It’s always a good sign when a show is binge-worthy. Besides the excellent writing, The Shrink Next Door has a dream cast. Will Ferrell gives a layered performance that is both humorous and at times heartbreaking.

Like any good actor, Ferrell does so much with simply a look or body language. Paul Rudd uses his charm to amazing effect as the titular shrink who worms and infests into Will’s life. Rudd never comes off like a bad guy. In fact, you can easily see why someone would fall for his character’s charisma. Katherine Hahn, of course, shines as Will’s fiery sister Phyllis and proves she can steal scenes and hold her own against powerhouses like Ferrell and Rudd.

Further on in the series I will talk more about the themes but I will say that as a three-episode introduction this had me totally transfixed from the first few moments. Clearly, this is going to be must-watch television.
