The Strong Women of Iron Fist

This is something I’m sure not a lot of people will talk about, but Iron Fist season two really had a collection of badass women. There were times you could forget that the show was supposed to be around Danny Rand and completely focus on the female empowerment that this season showcased. There was never a moment where a woman’s capabilities were questioned due to her gender and at no time was she put down for simply being a woman. It was a refreshing thing to watch, for even in the other Netflix Marvel shows did we see little splashes on this outdated trend.

Colleen Wing

There is no denying that Colleen is a strong woman. There were times during Iron Fist where you believed that she was the main character in the show and some truly amazing things happen to Colleen during this time. Not only can Colleen fight, but she is deeply caring. As someone who only wishes to see good things happen to her community, she takes on so much, and sacrifices parts of herself to hold up the man she loves. After Iron Fist season one and The Defenders, it’s good to see Colleen getting what she deserves and not punishing herself for being former Hand.

Misty Knight

When Misty Knight is on screen, we know an epic badass scene will follow. Misty was looking fierce in season two and she fit in so well. I was definitely getting major Daughters of the Dragon feels and if we don’t have at least a mini-series spin-off, I will be sorely disappointed. As a woman in law enforcement, she is both tactical, and compassionate. She’s also not afraid to lay it on someone and her calling Joy Meachum out was probably one of the single greatest moments we could have ever asked for. Don’t mess with her and her “Maserati Arm”.

Typhoid Mary

While I didn’t feel like season two exactly needed Typhoid Mary, there was no denying she was one crazy, but badass woman. If Jeph Loeb wanted to, he could have cast Alice Eve as Rachel Cole-Alves (a female version of The Punisher) and it would have fit better. Still, it was awesome seeing Mary completely tear down anyone in her path and that girl knew how to handle a gun. Even her bouts of mania were chilling and amazing to watch; it seems like the show is not done with her yet, so we’ll see if she pops up in season three or any other Netflix Marvel shows.

Joy Meachum

Listen, you’re probably asking yourself, why is she included on this list? Joy started the season off as a whiny, privileged person who had a chip on her shoulder that maybe could have understood, until she took way too far. Her constant insults towards her broken brother were unnecessary and I can’t lie that I believe she got what she deserved in the end. Still, she’s a woman not deterred from making her own path and using her money and opportunities to get what she wants. She’s cunning and looks at the bigger picture. Plus, I loved her one insult later in the season, “that was sexist and simplistic. How quaint.” Yes, Joy, call him out.

I have to give an honorable mention to Mrs. Yang. As the wife of Mr. Yang, who we’ve seen now in season one of Iron Fist and season two of Luke Cage; her role starts out small, but becomes more present as the season goes on. Needing to step up when an event in her circle happens, she is both there for her husband, and willing to take the place of the decision maker. She knows what she has to do in her world, but it doesn’t stop her from being compassionate and willing to entertain parlays to keep the peace in Chinatown.

The Netflix Marvel universe has so many strong women across it, but Iron Fist really impressed me this season. I enjoyed the collection of empowered women it had to offer, where there were so many points that I completely forgot the show was meant to be centered around Danny. Based on this, Loeb could definitely create a Daughters of the Dragon spin-off, where many other female heroes from the other shows could pop up.
