‘The Woman Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’ Review: Your Friendly Neighborhood Murder Mystery

The Rear Window plot. You see a murder. Or did you? Wait, did you really? What do you do? Who do you call? Not the Ghostbusters, they’re for something else entirely. Regardless, that story line has been played out a few time across film and now it’s reached television with the new series, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, streaming now on Netflix.

Kristen Bell stars as Anna, the woman who’s across the street. Cheeky huh? She’s mourning the death of her daughter and the end of her marriage with a glass of wine, or ten. She’s trying her best to stay clear minded but with her drinking and medication cocktails it does not seem to be doing anything but making it all much much worse. All of a sudden a new handsome neighbor, Neil (played by Tom Riley) moves in. He’s a handsome widow who unfortunately has a gorgeous girlfriend Anna can’t compete with…that is until she thinks she sees the girlfriend murdered by Neil himself. B did she really see the murder or is this just a side affect from her medication? Dun dun dun.

Now this show sounds serious but it’s not. It deals with dark tones and serious things but it’s more of a play on them. Like the Scary Movie franchise way of playing up things. The Woman in the House across the street from the Girl in the Window is a parody. It’s a weird strange parody of some lifetime murder movie with the bakeware destruction of a monster truck rally thrown in.

I didn’t expect the show to ride the line between drama and comedy as much as it did. I sort of felt a little sad and bored. I wish it had something…more. Throughout every episode I found myself missing something. I love Kristen Bell but she was just sort of one note-ish. I say “ish” because she tried but still, it was sort of the same scene over and over and I get that it was trying to be funny but sometimes a joke needs to be murdered across the street in real time.

If anything this series was advertised a bit wrong. It didn’t sell me what I got and I will admit, it was hard to keep watching. Maybe if there had been a bit more Hitchcock ways or more true comedy it would have been a really solid watch. Regardless, there were great little moments and the mystery was fun but it could have just been a movie if anything.

Final Across the Street Thoughts?

The Woman Across the Street from the Girl in the Window had all the makings of a great series for me but fell a bit flat over and over in the rain. If anything I hope this inspires more weird parody series in that lifetime horror vein of stories. But I think this season can just stay in the house after seeing the girl in the window if you get my drift.
