Todd McFarlane Tells Fans To Expect A Different Looking Spawn In His Reboot

When Todd McFarlane created Spawn for the comic publisher he helped create, Image Comics, he probably didn’t realize how popular the character would become. In fact in 1997, McFarlane, in conjunction with New Line Cinema, produced a major motion picture starring Michael Jai White as the mercenary turned Hell Spawn. Its performance was modest at best but it did almost double its 40 million dollar budget between world wide and domestic ticket sales. With the announcement by McFarlane of a reboot that will be coming in the next couple of years, it sounds like the creator has some different ideas for Spawn’s suit this time around. This is despite the fact that Walking Dead producer and special effects master Greg Nicotero has signed on to the movie. This will be a return for Nicotero to the Spawn character as he worked on the 97 film version of Spawn.

In comments made to Comicbook.com, McFarlane explained that Spawn fans will recognize the character, as played in this version by Jamie Fox, but he might not have the look that fans have grown accustomed to.

“Does Spawn have a dark mask and his body dark and then does he have a cape in the comic books? Yes, yes, yes. Will he have all of that in the movie? Yes, yes, yes,” McFarlane told us. “So it’s not like I’m going to give him wings instead of a cape and I’m not going to give him no mask instead of a mask. There’s no going to be any of that. It just won’t be exactly what a hardcore fan is used to. But I’m hoping that people who just go and are familiar with Spawn will say, ‘Yeah, it’s in the box.’ And people who know nothing about Spawn will go, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ And I have to design for film goers not for comic book fans because the film goers are going to be bigger than the pool of the comic book fans.”
Does McFarlane’s hint of a Spawn suit redesign give you pause, or are you excited to see what the Spawn Creator has up his sleeve? Share your thought with us at GVNation.
