We’re a little halfway through 2024 and while there’s plenty of awesome films coming up, we have to give applause to our favorite movies of 2024 so far. This list is full of movies that several of our collaborators said were their favorite movies of the year!

A woman holding a sword in a field at sunset.

Rebel Moon Part 2 – Picked by Jeremy

The sequel has some jaw-dropping battle scenes with breathtaking special effects. We have to admit that they are effective, relentless, and can be exciting.

Kung panda and a panda holding a stick.

Kung Fu Panda 4 – Picked by Lane Mills, Lisolette

Few, if any, animated franchises have the prestige of the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. Packing some of the most revered villains in the art as well as a trademark style and career-defining role for Jack Black. Each film up to this point has represented a necessary movement forward for the franchise and characters within. Thankfully, and perhaps even surprisingly, Kung Fu Panda 4 continues this trend. It serves not only as a worthy entry in the lineage of films before it but also moves the series in a fresh new direction.

A man and woman in pajamas sitting on a bed with red lights.

Lisa Frankenstein – Picked by Phil Walsh

However, for a first-time feature, Zelda Williams has a natural eye for a comedic and visual Gothic flare. She has fun with the decades of nostalgia, full of big hair, shoulder pads, Precious Moments figurines, signature REO Speedwagon ballots, Fuddruckers name drops, and those tasteless Grapenuts. Heck, Williams even has Newton dressing like a carbon copy of a young Bernadette Peters prancing the halls of her school like Tiffany in a mall about to sing “I Think We’re Alone Now.” The director also has an ear for a killer 80s-inspired soundtrack.

A man and woman embrace and kiss in front of a large, round, metallic structure. Both are dressed in casual, rugged clothing.

Fall Guy – Picked by Phil Walsh, Jeffrey

The answer? Stunting his way to victory. Plenty will go into Fall Guy wanting an action spectacle, which they’ll get – Leitch and stunt coordinator Keir Beck have really outdone themselves in terms of sheer multitude, executing everything from gunfights to boat chases to even a heavily choreographed helicopter brawl – but what audiences may not expect is how much all of this action informs the storytelling. It may seem like an obvious conceit, but watching a stuntman overcome the cutthroat industry machine (heavily dramatized but metaphorical nonetheless) by doing what he was born to do gives the film’s redemption story an unexpected thematic heft.

Two individuals crouching behind a car for safety amidst an apparent dangerous situation with debris falling around them.

Civil War – Picked by Lisolette, Ricky V

Nonetheless, the project moved forward and, to nobody’s shock, Garland has delivered yet another contentious thriller, one that is leaving critics as divided as the world they live in. This is certainly intentional to some degree – Garland insists he made this film to provoke conversation and uses many provocative images in order to do so – but the film proves to be a far more revealing Rorschach test than even Garland could have designed.

Immaculate – Picked by Lisolette, Phil Walsh

The end result is a horror film clearly made with passion from all involved and one that pays homage to the greats of the past through its palpable visual style and structure. However, its most important asset is Sweeney herself, proving once again that she’s an actress to watch as she brings this film to a gut-wrenching conclusion.

Challengers – Picked by Jaylan, Jeffrey, Lisolette

The film slots nicely with Guadagnino’s examination of overpowering allure, from the resplendent Call Me By Your Name to the feral Bones & All. What makes Challengers novel in his canon is its conventional appeal. Guadagnino fully embraces the high-octane spirit of tennis while imbuing it with his sensual sensibility. The match sets overflow with kinetic energy.

A woman with a dirt-covered face stands on a desert road, looking intently forward.

Furiosa – Picked by Jeffrey, Phil Walsh

Still, Miller manages to subvert the most basic assumptions of this world. Furiosa is split into five “chapters,” each with its own rhythms to convey the raw brutality surrounding the titular character. The first two chapters may resemble Fury Road the most. Those chapters ravage us with a relentless barrage of violence and grotesqueries that is often overwhelming and frequently astounding.

Animated characters Joy and Fear from "Inside Out" in bright, colorful surroundings with lights. Joy has blue hair and is excitedly raising her arms, while Fear has a nervous expression and wild red hair.
JOY AND ANXIETY — Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of freshly minted teenager Riley just as a new Emotion shows up unexpectedly. Much to Joy’s surprise, Anxiety isn’t the type who will take a back seat either. Featuring the voices of Amy Poehler as Joy and Maya Hawke as Anxiety, “Inside Out 2” releases only in theaters Summer 2024.© 2023 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Inside Out 2 – Picked by Ricky V, Jeffrey

Grab the fam and tell your friends, the alarm has sounded and it’s time to experience puberty again. Brought to us by Disney and Pixar and directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 is a delightful reminder to be yourself. It helps remind young people together with adults that no one has it all figured out. Not only will this vibrant film make you feel seen while dazzling you in many ways, but puberty has never felt more relatable. Picking where the first film left off, the personification of emotions remains storytelling gold.

Dune Part 2 – Picked by Dom, Ricky V, and EVERYONE

The wait is over and it’s time to buckle up. War is coming. Directed and co-written by Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Two is remarkably epic in every way possible. This film is easily one of the greatest sci-fi spectacles you’ll ever see. From its stunning visuals and breathtaking cinematography to the masterful score and phenomenal storytelling, it’s the best film of the year. Furthermore, I don’t foresee any film this year topping it. From a technical standpoint, Dune: Part Two is almost flawless.
