Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed

Many would know Bob Ross as the talented painter who could paint a shimmering lake framed by snow-capped mountains and “happy little trees” in record time. He was one of the world’s most famous art instructors who became a popular household name. Bob Ross called his mistakes “happy accidents” – reaffirming our faith in the fact that mistakes do not define who we are and are just building blocks along the way. This film strikes the perfect balance that celebrates and illuminates the life of an artist whose main aim was to spread positivity and the poor handling of the legacy he left behind. From doing an excellent job at portraying the intricacies of a character that wanted to spread and teach the art of painting across the world, this film also successfully portrayed the ugly side of fame. What followed Bob’s death was a plethora of legal and moral battles. It all started when a couple of Annette and Walt Kowalski, who worked as Ross’s business partners, took control of Bob Ross Inc.

American Factory

American Factory is an eye-opening film from the desks of directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert. The film narrates how a Chinese auto glass company called Fuyao bought an old General Motors car plant in Dayton, Ohio, in 2014. This transaction garnered a lot of praise since the plant closed in 2008, and reopening promised investment and hundreds of new jobs. However, things do not turn out quite as planned as there is a significant clash of interests between the Chinese and the Americans. It grapples with the meaning of the word “freedom” and its implication in this global economy. However, this film does more than just portray the nuances of an inter-cultural clash. There are proofs of idiosyncratic little moments when the emotions of solidarity and friendship override distrust.

BlackPink: Light Up The Sky

K-pop is one of the most significant sensations in the world of music right now. With catchy grooves and heartfelt lyrics, K-pop quite easily won the hearts of many around the world. BlackPink – a household name known to almost everyone who keeps up with recent trends, taking over the world – and this documentary offers an insight into their lives. An excellent entry point for anyone seeking answers to questions they might have about K-pop, this is the film to look out for. Documentarian Caroline Suh shines the spotlight on the struggles of the four band members and their individual stories of triumph. This documentary was released two weeks after Blackpink’s first studio album called “The Album.” This strategic release added to the film’s appeal described as “an endearing documentary that emphasizes each member’s individuality.”

Abducted in Plain Sight

Abducted in plain sight is the kind of documentary that will keep you awake till the middle of the night. It makes you think about how one person can be responsible for so many hardships. Abducted in Plain Sight is a spine-chilling, true-crime documentary that revolves around specific incidents in Idaho. The story narrates the tale of how a 12-year-old girl was abused and kidnapped by a neighbour right in front of her parents’ eyes. This 91-minute documentary revolves around a sociopathic neighbour, Bob “B” Berchtold, and his obsession with the daughter of the Broberg Family – Jan.

This frenzied and unbelievable story holds a mirror to the workings of the mind of a mentally deranged person and the society at large. It makes us want to reevaluate our opinions about the lengths one person can go to pursue his obsessions. We do hope no family has to be subject to the presence of such obsessed neighbours, ever. If you are looking for things to do after watching the documentary, we suggest playing free games to change your mood.

American Murder: The Family Next Door

How would you feel if the seemingly perfect family ends up getting murdered at the hands of one of their most beloved? American Murder: The family next door tells us the Watts Family members’ deaths horrifying story. Shanann, the wife of Chris Watts, had a very unruly social presence online. She regularly posted videos of her beautiful family to keep her followers and friends updated about the various aspects of her life. Anyone who followed her could get a sense of who she was as a person through the footage that’s publicly available through social media services.

In one such video, she is heard calling herself “the luckiest girl” for having met her husband, Chris, portraying a time in her life when she was at her lowest. However, after she failed to show up for her ob-gyn checkup one morning, her close friend and colleague Nickole Utoft Atkinson became suspicious. What follows is an unbelievable tale of the sociopathic tendencies of human beings when faced with choices. The Watts family murders of 2018 was a much-publicized, gruesome affair that uncovered how curated social media lives often lend an inauthentic sheen to a miserable existence in reality. The film was directed by Jenny Popplewell and built up to the point where Christopher Lee Watts, a handsome man of 33, confessed to killing his pregnant wife Shanann, their unborn child Nico, and their two daughters Bella and Celeste in cold blood.
