Tracy Deonn’s Arthurian YA Novel ‘Legendborn’ Is Heading To Television

The Knights of the Roundtable will soon assemble on a television screen near you.  Deadline broke the news on Wednesday that Black Bear Television has purchased the rights to Tracy Deonn’s young adult fantasy novel, Legendborn.  Writer and producer, Felicia D. Henderson, who is currently the showrunner of Netflix’s upcoming teen vampire drama, First Kill, will write and produce the adaptation.

After attending college at her deceased mother’s alma mater, Bree Matthews is swept into a supernatural conflict between the descendants of King Arthur and his knights and an army ancient demons. As she’s pulled deeper into the war, she discovers her own dormant powers, and suspects  that her mother’s untimely death wasn’t an accident. The novel combines ancient myths and legends with literal Black Girl Magic as Bree uncovers her familial legacy and learns to embrace it to turn the tide of the war.

Published by Simon & Schuster in 2020, the book is critically acclaimed, spent nine weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List, and was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Award. In 2021, it received the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award For New Talent.  The sequel, Bloodmarked, will be released in November of this year.

Black Bear Television’s Teddy Schwarzman is shopping the series to networks and streamers in the coming weeks. Once picked up,  Deonn will executive produce with Henderson.  Schwarzman, Christopher Casanova, Sleena Wilson, Darryl Taja, Ben Stillman, and Pouya Shahbazian.
