The lineup for the 2023 Tribeca Festival has been revealed, featuring a diverse selection of feature narratives, documentaries, and animated films. Actor-directed titles are a prominent feature, with world premieres from David Duchovny, Michael Shannon, Chelsea Peretti, John Slattery, Lily Rabe, Hamish Linklater, and Jennifer Esposito. Additionally, the festival will showcase the North American premiere of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener and the New York premiere of Randall Park’s Shortcomings.
The documentary lineup for the Tribeca Festival includes films centered around legendary figures such as Stan Lee, Biz Markie, and Dan Rather. A conversation between Dan Rather and director Frank Marshall will follow the world premiere of the Rather documentary. Live events, such as performances and masterclasses, will also take place after select screenings. These events include a performance by Gloria Gaynor after the world premiere of Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive, a performance by Sara Bareilles after the world premiere of Waitress, the Musical – Live on Broadway!, and a songwriting masterclass by Indigo Girls following the New York premiere of Its Only Life After All.
“The Tribeca Festival is a celebratory event that honors artists and uplifts attendees, and this year is no exception with a lineup of 109 feature films from 127 filmmakers. Over the course of 12 thrilling days, we invite audiences to explore the magic of storytelling as a powerful tool of democracy, activism, and social awareness,” Tribeca Festival co-founder and Tribeca Enterprises CEO Jane Rosenthal said in a statement. “We’re also proud to highlight the 50th anniversary of hip-hop as a culture-defining genre that originated right here in New York City, with insightful world premieres about beat-boxing legends and live performances from today’s top-charting musicians.”
The Tribeca Festival’s features program is truly diverse, with films from 36 countries and 43 debut directors. Among the 93 premieres, there are eight North American premieres, one international premiere, one U.S. premiere, and six New York premieres. Female directors have a strong presence, with 41% of all feature films directed by women, and 68% of the competition feature films directed by women. BIPOC representation is also notable, with 36% of all feature films directed by BIPOC filmmakers, including two Indigenous directors.
“This year’s slate of films is a joyful celebration of everything we love about the big screen experience,” Tribeca Festival director and VP, programming Cara Cusumano. “We are bringing to New York eye-popping 3D films and rousing music docs, white-knuckle thrillers and knee-slapping comedies, independent edge and old Hollywood glamour. And as potent as the work is on-screen, we are equally excited to ‘plus up’ the moviegoing experience off-screen with an incredible lineup of live experiences in ‘Spotlight+’.”
Tribeca Festival is back in New York from June 7-18 with an exciting lineup that includes a special program called “Expressions of Black Freedom” in honor of Juneteenth, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. The festival is also launching the “Escape from Tribeca” sidebar to expand its “Midnight” program and showcase genre movies from different countries. Fans of classic martial arts movies can also look forward to a 50th-anniversary screening of Enter the Dragon, followed by a discussion with co-star Angela Mao and producer Andre Morgan.
Some selections from the festival will be available to stream via the Tribeca at Home platform, from June 19th through July 2nd.
The festival will also present the second annual Human/Nature Award, which recognizes a film that highlights innovative solutions to environmental issues. This year’s award goes to Common Ground, directed by Rebecca and Josh Tickell, which will make its debut at the festival.
