At Talking Comics, we are always proud to offer exclusive looks into exciting projects. Today, we’re honored to debut some exclusive pages from a graphic novel that has been whispered about, praised, and sought after for years. Zhang Xiaoyu’s Twin Lotuses, a modern classic of Chinese graphic storytelling, is finally making its English‑language debut through the auspices of Oni and Magnetic Press. This exciting release is poised to be a major moment for international comics.

    Twin Lotuses

Zhang’s art is a world unto itself: atmospheric, meticulous, and emotionally charged. Twin Lotuses blends psychological tension with the artist’s dreamlike imagery.  Combining to create a reading experience that feels both intimate and, at times, mythic. Our exclusive page reveals offers a glimpse into that world—a launching point that encapsulates the book’s quiet dread and visual poetry.

A surreal illustration of a woman with a split face—half ornate mask, half skull—against a large lotus flower, with other figures and dramatic elements surrounding her. Text reads "XIAOYU Twin Lotuses.

A seagull flies over the ocean near a large ship, with crowds of people gathered on the deck below. Three black-and-white panels show seagulls flying over a rough sea near a ship. The bottom panel depicts people crowded together on a lifeboat. Text reads: "October 1037, Tangier, Ghana. A crowd gathers and fights on a wooden deck in the top two panels, while people read newspapers on benches and a person shouts while holding a newspaper in the bottom panels. A performer in elaborate costume sings passionately on stage, with musicians in the background and a large audience watching; speech bubbles contain dramatic dialogue. Four black-and-white comic panels: people crowd around a map, a person points dramatically, a group looks alarmed, and a boat sails towards a bright light on turbulent water. A manga page depicts a World War II-era fighter plane in flight, a pilot in goggles, a naval ship, and a dramatic aerial battle over the ocean.

With its hypnotic artwork, atmospheric tension, and Zhang Xiaoyu’s unmistakable creative voice, Twin Lotuses is shaping up to be one of the year’s standout graphic releases. Oni Press and Magnetic Press continue their streak of championing bold international talent, and this preview makes it clear: Twin Lotuses is going to hit hard. Keep it on your radar for its April 28th release.
