It was expected, and considered a mistake to try to push the ‘R’ envelope. But lately, that perception has been given a challenge. First by Deadpool which pushed the envelope with its violence and irreverent humor. Then by Logan which told a more drama laden story.
A Clown will Lead the Way
But it was the recent success of Todd Phillips Joker that really opened the eyes of what is possible. Even with an R rating, Joker became a huge success at the Box Office and with fans. With that kind of momentum, it was now seen as a workable situation to make a R rated comic book film.
Can you spell Venom 2 with an R?
With that in mind, the subject of the next Venom film came up. If there was a film that fans thought would garner an R rating, it was the original Venom. However, that was not what the Producers envisioned. But now, they are considering a different tact. This was revealed by Venom Producer Matt Tolmach when asked about the sequel.
I mean, I think you always have to think about [it], now that that works. Having said that, our movie worked really well. Our franchise exists as it is, and I don’t think anybody is looking to just say, ‘Hey, they [did it]!’ We have a place in the world. So it isn’t like suddenly everybody’s considering what to do with the rating. … I think what Joker does is it tells you that you can succeed. For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden. … So you know, I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences. And it just means that there are more opportunities for that kind of storytelling.
While this doesn’t mean that the new Venom will have an R rating, it does open the door for that possibility. That’s more than could be said for the first version. Does it matter if the next Venom is Rated R? Share your Rating suggestion with us at GeekVibesNation.
