It was Agatha all along~
Or was it? In today’s episode, we pick up from last week’s epic reveal. Wanda’s personable Agnes is actually the powerful witch Agatha Harkness. Which, is something many people have assumed her to be. But, to find it out made a lot of sense and we all couldn’t wait to see what Agatha was cooking up.
Slight Spoilers
But, today’s episode was really less of explaining who Agatha is as it was explaining who Wanda is. Yes, we got an awesome flashback scene of Agatha during the Salem witch trials. And I love the exploration and embracing of witches in the MCU. Which, does play a lot into who Wanda is – this episode certainly did great work in slightly retconning explanations that Age of Ultron had given us as to why Wanda has her powers.
More important than Wanda’s powers is the emotional trauma this episode decided to explore. We’ve heard of the story of how Wanda and Pietro’s parents were killed. But, we never got to see. Never got to really feel what it must have been like and now we know. Now, we’re seeing it. We see how Wanda and Vision’s bond began and why Wanda went to Westview. It’s an eye-opening experience. All masterfully acted by Elizabeth Olsen, who makes this powerful being feel so tangible. We can all mourn with her and we all feel the heavyweight she has on her shoulders.
Our suspicions of Hayward being absolutely the worst is confirmed in this episode. And Kathryn Hahn is just so great as Agatha. I really hope we get to see more of her, because she eats every scene she’s in. Episode eight was one of the most emotional moments in the MCU and is a cold dose of reality for WandaVision viewers. We’re no longer in the quaint 1950s with Wanda and Vision making dinner to impress Vision’s boss. Everything in Westview is the result of an unresolved trauma that Wanda cannot break free of.
