WandaVision Review: A Mysteriously Good Time

WandaVision will premiere on Disney+ with two episodes and I was fortunate enough to be able to see the first 3 episodes ahead of the premiere. Originally, WandaVision was the show I was least excited for in the Marvel TV show lineup. But, with the concept and trailers that have come out, the show shot up to the top of my list. And I was not disappointed having seen three episodes of this insanely creative concept.

WandaVision Plays On Classic 1950s Sitcoms

Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision literally starts off as some I Love Lucy fever dream without any explanation as to why Wanda Maximoff and Vision are living like a married couple in the 1950s. The first two episodes are entirely in black and white and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think it was a regular sitcom. Except, of course; that Scarlet Witch has powers and Vision is an android. Both play into the nostalgic characterization of old-time sitcoms. There are laugh tracks, cheesy commercials (that are as important as they’re said to be), and mild sexism that’s so spot-on for the time.

What Happened to Wanda?

Wanda and Vision are trying to live normal little lives in this trippy little town, but we all know they’re far from normal. In each episode, there’s little moments where you can see that things are not as neatly strung together as Wanda wants it to be. And in some ways, I became quite sad. This is Wanda wanting a life with the person she loved and we know how impossible that is. That this blanket eventually will be lifted and I feel as if Wanda shouldn’t be punished for wanting happiness. Also, what happened in between Avengers: Endgame and now to make Wanda even do this?

If you pay attention closely, you can catch some Hydra Easter Eggs, as well as some Age of Ultron mentions. WandaVision can feel like its own entity, but the end of episode three very much ties into the overarching storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Honestly, I could probably just watch an entire show of Wanda and Vision being a loving couple (who occasionally get even flirtier than a movie would probably allow them to be). But, I am so incredibly interested in what else is going to happen. I feel at the edge of my seat, just anticipating what’s going to happen and when the cards are finally going to fall.

Rating: 4/5

I think WandaVision also is setting up for the larger picture in Doctor Strange 2. Wanda, for as amazing as she is; is incredibly powerful. And she’s lost a lot. She’s becoming protective of the alternate reality she’s making for herself. How will Wanda react when it all starts coming apart? We’ll have to keep watching to find out!
