Wonder Woman 1984 won’t be the only Warner Bros. movie to also premiere on HBO Max in addition to getting a theatrical release. According to reports, all 2021 Warner Bros. films will hit the streaming service. This includes The Matrix 4, Dune, In the Heights, The Many Saints of Newark, and The Suicide Squad. This is in addition to the theatrical releases. This may come as a surprise, but with COVID-19 having lasted longer than people have expected, no one can expect studios to push anymore. They have streaming services, use them.
To be specific, like with Wonder Woman 1984; the Warner Bros. films will be available on HBO Max for 31. After that, the films will only play in theaters until making its way back to traditional home entertainment – within the typical frame.
WarnerMedia chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff stated:
“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group. No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021.”
She continued:
“With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films. We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”
It’s unclear if this model will continue into 2022. For now and until vaccines are ready, movies are going to have to look a little differently than they did before. What do you think about this strategy and do you agree with it?
