What can we expect from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series?

Hello There. Easily the most anticipated announcement out of D23 this year was the upcoming Kenobi series which will be premiering and exclusively shown on Disney’s new streaming service Disney Plus. Much to fans delight it was also announced that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as the Jedi master. So, in true Star Wars fan fashion its time to widely speculate about what may or may not pop up in Kenobi. Even when we’re proven to be horribly wrong it’s still a load of fun.

Kenobi’s Exile

Let’s talk about what we know for certain. The series will take place in the 19-year gap between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. During this time Kenobi, now going by the name of Ben Kenobi was watching over a young Luke Skywalker during his exile on the desert planet. Thanks to various comics books and TV Series we know a good bit of what Obi-Wan got up to in those 19 years, most of which could be adapted to the live-action Disney Plus show.

In his earlier years on Tatooine, Kenobi kept a low profile quietly watching over Luke from a distance. He also visited the grave of Shmi Skywalker (Anakin’s mother) and apologized to her for failing her son. This lead to Kenobi experiencing dark visions of the past, leading to his old master Qui-Gon Jinn (portrayed by Liam Nesson in Episode I: The phantom menace) appearing to him as a force ghost to counsel him. This wouldn’t be the last time Qui-Gon appeared to Obi-Wan as it was revealed in the Star Wars novel “A Certain Point of View” that Qui-Gon’s spirit appeared to Obi-Wan during A New Hope when Luke rushes home to find his Aunt and Uncle murdered by the empire. Qui-Gon apologized to Kenobi for having him train Anakin all those years ago.

Could a small cameo from the one and only Liam Neeson be too much to ask? Could we see master and apprentice reunite in live-action once again? Its certainly possible, and Neeson has done voice-over work for the Clone Wars animated TV show before so the option is always there. Would you like to see Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan reunite again?

There’ll be back and in greater numbers…

Kenobi didn’t spend all 19 years on Tatooine getting a suntan, oh no. Kenobi had his fair share of fights on the sand dunes. Kenobi spent his times fighting off the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine, usually with a staff rather than his lightsaber to help keep physically fit and to keep a low profile. There was also an instance of Kenobi fighting off a group of Jabba the Hutts thugs who came demanding money from Uncle Owen and his family for a ‘Water Tax’. Kenobi once even fought off a Wookie bounty hunter named Black Krrsantan who kidnapped Owen and threatened a young Luke Skywalker.

Kenobi also made a few friends of Tatooine, offering to protect a group of Jawas from constant Tusken Raider attacks in exchange for some old ship parts which he gave to Luke as a gift.

There are plenty of dangers for Kenobi to face off against in his series, so we can be sure we’ll see him dawn his infamous blue-bladed lightsaber again.

One fight I’m almost certain we will not see is the rematch between Kenobi and his arch-nemesis Darth Maul. Despite both McGregor and Ray Park returning to reprise their roles in recent years, that battle has already played out in Star Wars Rebels, so as cool as it would be, that’s one fight the Kenobi series won’t feature.

Preparing for a future generation…

Luke Skywalker was all Kenobi had left after Anikan’s fall to the dark side during the events of Revenge of the Sith. Protecting Luke was Kenobi’s one and only priority, which is why I doubt Kenobi will leave Tatooine during the events of the Kenobi series. Obi-Wan made lots of preparations to eventually train Luke including writing a journal for the young boy, detailing the Force, the Clone Wars era and Jedi of old, and even telling Luke how to construct a lightsaber. Maybe we could see some of these journal pages being written and hopefully, we’ll finally see Kenobi learning how to pass on after death, a skill that only a few Jedi possessed.

I’m sure we can also look out for some Easter eggs and callbacks to Kenobi’s past. Possibly a reference to Satine, Kenobi’s potential lover from the Clone Wars or maybe we’ll even see his classic Clone Wars armor make an appearance in the series.

Who knows maybe the entire series will run like a “day in the life of” show with Kenobi, cooking lunch and cleaning up around his hut. What would you like to see most in the Kenobi series? let us know down below or over on Twitter.
