What If…? Episode Three Explores a More Serious Imaginative Story

Episodes one and two of Marvel’s What If…? were relatively fun. In episode one we explored Peggy Carter getting the super-soldier serum. And episode two explored T’Challa as Star-Lord. With these two fun, smile-filled episodes, episode three takes a bit of a grimmer turn. In this one, the question is asked – what if the Avengers were picked off before they were able to team up?

That’s right – episode three essentially kills off all of the Avengers we know and love. There are key scenes from movies in the MCU where, instead of the story continuing the way we’re familiar with it going; the Avengers are instead killed. And every single time, I was shocked by the means of the killing. Thor? Killed. Hulk? Killed. It is truly a shocking thing that I was not aware of. Maybe I should have looked at the title of the episode, which is called “What If…the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?”

While offering a darker story, this episode also keeps us engaged with a “who dun it” that pays off in an expected way. It also includes a really awesome contribution by Loki that would have been really cool to see in a live-action sense. I think after having such fun episodes beginning this series, it was almost depressingly refreshing having such a serious episode. Sure, the episode left us sullen at the end, but I really think that it was good seeing that the show wasn’t afraid to really explore “what if?”

    Rating: 4.5/5

As usual, the acting, storyline, and animated style is simply beautiful. The episode set up its plot perfectly and the real culprit of these deaths is truly surprising.
