Most people have probably started hobbies, joined clubs, signed up for activities, or tried new experiences that they were absolutely convinced they’d stick with forever, and then a few weeks later they’ve completely forgotten about them.
At the same time, there are other activities that somehow survive busy periods, life changes, bad weather, lack of motivation, and everything else that gets in the way – people keep making time for them year after year, even when they’re busier than they’ve ever been, and there’s usually a reason for that. The fact is that activities that last tend to fit into people’s lives in a way that makes them worth coming back to, and it’s often got very little to do with how exciting they are on paper. With that in mind, here are a few reasons some activities seem to stick around while others disappear.
They’re Easy To Fit Into Life
One thing that often gets overlooked is convenience but of course, an activity can be brilliant, but if it takes hours to organise, involves travelling long distances, or needs a huge amount of planning every single time, there’s a good chance people will eventually stop doing it, even if they really enjoy it.
On the other hand, the activities people return to regularly often fit reasonably well around everything else they have going on, which makes it much easier to keep saying yes to them. And the more you say yes, the more you do, the better you get, and the more fun you have.
People Know What They’re Getting
Trying something new can be exciting, but there’s also something appealing about familiarity, and after a long week, a lot of people don’t necessarily want to spend hours researching something completely different to do – they already know what they enjoy, so they’re happy to go back to it.
The reality is that familiarity removes a lot of the uncertainty because people know what to expect, they know whether they’ll enjoy it, they know roughly how long it’ll take, what it’ll cost, and whether it’s worth making time for, and that always makes the decision a lot easier.
They Give People Something Different To Think About
Most of us spend a lot of time thinking about the same sorts of things, like work deadlines, bills, shopping lists, appointments, jobs around the house, and everything else that comes with everyday life.
The problem is that your brain doesn’t always stop thinking about those things just because you’ve technically finished for the day, and that’s one reason activities can be so appealing because for a little while, your attention can go somewhere else because you’re focused on what you’re doing rather than everything waiting for you tomorrow.
They Work For Different Groups Of People
One thing that helps certain activities remain popular is that they’re flexible, which means friends can do them together, families can do them together, colleagues can do them together, and so on. And if there are plenty of opportunities to involve lots of people, then those activities are definitely going to be popular and more fun to do.
For example, an escape room might be something you try with friends one month, family members a few months later, and work colleagues at some point after that, and although the activity stays (about) the same, the experience feels different because the people involved are different.
They Don’t Feel Like A Waste Of Time
Unfortunately, most adults have limited free time, which means they’re often quite selective about how they spend it, and that has a knock-on effect on the activities people return to regularly because people want to leave them feeling like their time was well spent.
That doesn’t mean the activity needs to be educational, productive, or useful in any obvious way, and sometimes enjoying yourself is reason enough, but the important thing is that people leave feeling glad they did it rather than wishing they’d spent their afternoon doing something else.
They Create Traditions
Over time, some activities become habits, and that’s not a negative in any way. It could be you make it a yearly event, or a monthly meet-up, or maybe something friends always do when they get together, even if it’s not a regular thing.
And once the activities start becoming more a part of your routine, people just keep doing it because as well as the activity itself, it’s also become connected to friendships, family traditions, and shared memories as well.
They’re Never Exactly The Same Twice
Even when an activity follows the same basic format, small differences can keep it interesting, and that could be different people, different situations, different conversations, and different outcomes, so you never really feel like you’re repeating yourself or getting bored.
The reality is that people generally enjoy a mixture of familiarity and variety, and that really means they want enough familiarity to feel comfortable, but enough variety to stop things becoming boring. If you can find activities that manage to balance both they’ll usually have much longer staying power.
They Give People A Reason To Leave The House
It sounds simple, but sometimes just having a reason to leave the house can be all you actually need to make something fun. After all, after spending a week working, studying, or dealing with everyday responsibilities, having something in the diary can be enough motivation to get out and do something different.
Without those plans, it’s often very easy for free time to disappear without you doing anything with it (which can be fine, but it’s good to mix it up a bit). The fact is that many people aren’t necessarily looking for constant excitement, and what they really want is enjoyable ways to spend their time – if they find that, they’ll keep coming back.
Basically, in the end, activities don’t have to be extraordinary or impressive or anything else to become part of someone’s life, and more often than not, they just need to be enjoyable, easy to fit into a busy schedule, and worth making time for again next week, next month, or even next year.
