Why This Character HAD to Die in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

SPOILER WARNING:

There are a few things that are unforgivable in this world. Biting your fork while eating, not using your blinker when turning, and Loki’s death in Avengers: Infinity War. Tom Hiddleston has played the God of Mischief since the first Thor movie in 2011. Since then, Hiddleston has become a cornerstone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans look forward to his appearances at conventions, his name dropped in movies, and almost every villain in the MCU we always compare to Loki.

Sure, we probably knew he’d die in Infinity War. I was accepting it. Even as a huge Loki fan, I knew his time must be coming to an end. It was too much of a gift to us to have Loki and Thor finally reconcile in Thor: Ragnarok; the Russo brothers had to rip that happiness away. And they did. Within the first ten minutes of the movie, Thanos has obliterated the ship carrying all of the Asgardians. Heimdell is dead and Loki is killed after foolishly trying to attack the titan, which had a lot of people wondering why? Why this action, this early in the film?

According to Joe Russo, the death was intentional because, “Part of what we wanted to do, out of the gate, was to unsettle you as you’re watching the film. You’re sitting in the theater thinking, ‘Most characters in the Marvel Universe have been safe for a decade.’ And we wanted to knock you off-kilter and make the audience understand that the stakes were going to be significant and the cost was going to be very high in the movie.”

Okay, Joe, not cool. I didn’t need to be unsettled that early in the film. The ending was unsettling enough! Plus, this is Loki. We have seen Loki go from public enemy number one to deeply caring about his brother Thor. I would have loved to see a pseudo-reunion between the trickster and the rest of the Avengers. This was the guy who tried to level New York City and suddenly now he’s helpful! It would have been awkward, but also a full turnaround.

Granted, it was to be expected. Loki’s whole mission in the first Avengers was made possible by Thanos. We knew that due to him not returning the Tesseract to Thanos that there’d be consequences. I had read somewhere that Loki’s death in Thor: The Dark World was meant to be his final film, but due to fan’s adoration of the character, the death was made temporary. I am happy we were to see the Thanos/Loki arc come around full circle, even if it came to a tragic end. And I am happy that the character was killed off after having made amends with Thor.

There have been a few behind the scene photos of Loki in Avengers 4, but from the looks of it they’re all flashbacks. Whether Tom Hiddleston pops up in the sequel or that’s it for his character, we’ll always remember Loki as one of the most present characters in the MCU. Avengers: Infinity War is available on digital HD and will become available on DVD/Blu Ray August 14th.
