Synopsis: “Wonka” tells the wondrous story of how a young chocolate-maker, armed with nothing but a hatful of dreams, manages to change the world, one delectable bite at a time.
It is often said that blood is thicker than water, however, there are plenty of instances that would say otherwise. You can’t choose your family, but you can choose friends that become like family. When push comes to shove, it’s all about trust. And if the trust is solidified, you’ll have a lifelong bond.
“Everything good in this world started with a dream.”
You may know how the story ends, but do you know how it began? See how the best chocolate in the world came to be. Written and directed by Paul King, Wonka is delightfully wacky and incredibly charming. This candy-coated cinematic affair is the perfect treat for the holiday season. Filled with satisfying songs, zany characters, and a heart as golden as the famous ticket, this melodic movie is fun for the whole family. Its themes and messaging will resonate with fans new and old, young and seasoned. It just might reignite ideas that you once had and inspire new ones. Based on the iconic character Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s bestselling children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we are taken on a dream-driven journey sweeter than a Wonka Bar.
In this origin story of sorts, we learn what drives the charismatic chocolatier and what makes him so special. From hard work and innovation to a little bit of magic and naïveté, this is not only a recipe for great chocolate but a great story. And while this rags-to-riches tale is primarily focused on the future chocolate factory owner, he is far from the only narrative. There is the hopeless orphan, the unscrupulous innkeeper, the corrupt police chief, the Oompa Loompa who’s on a mission, and what is essentially the chocolate Illuminati. When you mix it all together, you get a multi-layered and multi-flavored morsel that hits all the notes like an Everlasting Gobstopper. There is deception at every turn, tricks around every corner, and fun from beginning to end.
“This has to be the best chocolate in the world.”
You’re probably wondering how Timothée Chalamet compares to his Willy Wonka predecessors, Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. I’m happy to report that Chalamet delivers a magical performance. While we are used to seeing aloof and mysterious roles from him on the big screen, it is now very clear that he can do it all. He brings the Chalamagic if you will. The story steers clear of the racial overtones of the Oompa Loompas who have been the topic of academic papers over the years. However, some may wonder why a little person wasn’t cast as the crafty green-haired trouble-maker. Nevertheless, Hugh Grant’s performance is perfected for this film. As it treats each character with love, the story reminds us to dream and dream big, to work hard, and to be kind and have compassion for those around us. It offers hope in the face of imminent doom, laughter when all seems sad, and perseverance as adversity attempts to take everything. Finally, it leaves you with a smile on your face.
The film looks amazing. As you are transported to the campy world of Wonka, you’ll never want to leave. From the vibrancy of the pastel colors to the flatness of the neutrals, every scene pops. It is pure eye candy. The songs are catchy and you’ll get to witness what inspired Wonka’s most iconic song. The writing is witty and heartwarming as it pairs perfectly with the score. This uplifting adventure is one you don’t want to miss. It fits perfectly with the films that came before it. Its rewatchability is high.
Pace & Pop
The pacing of this chocolate-covered tune-filled event is pitch-perfect. Like taking a boat on a chocolate river, this journey is a pleasant ride with exciting turbulence. What popped for me was the production design and overall aesthetic. Within minutes, you’ll feel like you’re in a different world and anything can happen.
Characters & Chemistry
Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant
The chemistry of the actors and the execution of the characters make the film a complete joy. Again Timothée Chalamet is phenomenal as Willy Wonka. I was skeptical at first, but he proved that he is more than worthy to don the purple velvet coat and brown top hat. The relationship Wonka has with Noodle (Calah Lane) is incredibly sweet and feels akin to films of the past. A great deal of the laughs come from Keegan-Michael Key, no surprise. As the ever-expanding Police Chief, he feels like a nod to the original. Hugh Grant’s on-screen personality encompasses his portrayal of the Oompa Loompa. And Olivia Colman can do no wrong.
Wonka releases in theaters on December 15, 2023. Remain safe and always read the fine print.
