Season two of Netflix’s YOU showed us that there is someone out there that could match Joe’s craziness. While Joe and Love should be a match made in heaven (or hell), it seems that being too alike could really hurt a marriage. Season three hit the streaming service only a few days ago and like many, I fled to Netflix to watch all ten episodes. It seems, on the surface; that every season of You follows a theme. Penn Badgley plays Joe and Joe gets obsessed with a woman. To the point of destruction.
Slight Spoilers
You’d think this concept would get repetitive or boring after a while. However, it doesn’t. Especially with season three, when a wild card was thrown in. Season two revealed that Love is just as obsessive as Joe and while the two are alike, this is a concept source of tension between the couple in season three. It’s very clear that Joe can only “love” a woman when he sees them in an innocent light – as someone he needed to protect. As soon as Love became a person – revealed herself to be just like him – he lost his obsession with her. This is a trend with Joe – as he lost interest in Beck as well as soon as she actually became a person. The thing is, Love had the resources internally and externally to fight against Joe.
It’s hard to say who is worse in this relationship – it’s hard to say who should come out on top. Joe and Love are both delusional in their reasons as to why they do what they do. But, they’re both murderers who cannot control their impulses. Let me also add, though; Victoria Pedretti really gave us a master class in acting this season – her ability to show emotions, as well as become frighteningly disturbing really is an art form.
I Enjoyed the Side Characters This Season
On top of essentially following the same theme of Joe obsessing over a new woman, this season also followed the trend of having characters that are over-exaggerated to make a point. You is very on the nose socially and they use the titles of their episodes and the side characters to get this point across. Though, I have to admit that between Theo, Marienne, and Dante, this season had my favorite array of side characters. I even warmed up to Sherry and Cary – who, in the beginning; felt very on par with the one-dimensional annoying personalities that the previous two seasons had.
One thing I do really appreciate about You is the fact that they never apologize for Joe’s behavior – even if the show is from his perspective. They show his childhood, his reasonings, but they never excuse his actions. You also isn’t afraid to not only kill off characters they’ve built up, but to take shocking turns in their finales. You is expected and it isn’t a cookie-cutter show.
Rating:4.5/5
Honestly, season three has to be my favorite season of You. I felt like I was simply being strung along seasons one and two, but it was season three that I really felt invested in. That isn’t to say I exactly think it deserves a season four – which, it was just renewed for. While Joe is no hero, he does keep getting away with what he does. Which, I understand is the show’s way of really twisting traditional TV show/movie tropes on its head. However, I think I can speak for most people when I say, Joe really needs to get what he deserves.
